Chapter 3 - The Interrogation and the Frozen Assets

The holding cells at the federal detention center smelled of bleach, cold steel, and lingering desperation. Ryan sat at the stainless-steel table, his expensive Italian suit looking foolishly out of place under the harsh, flickering fluorescent lights. His hands were cuffed to a bolted loop on the table, and his signature smirk had been entirely replaced by a pale, hollow expression of shock.

Across from him sat Special Agent Miller of the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division, flanked by a stenographer.

“Let’s go over it one more time, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller said, tapping a thick stack of financial forensic reports on the table. “At 8:14 AM today, our automated tracing protocols—flagged and initiated by your former father-in-law, David—detected a massive, multi-tiered asset flight from your personal and corporate holdings. Within ninety minutes, a federal judge signed emergency freezing orders across all forty-two of your domestic and international accounts.”

“There’s been a mistake!” Ryan stammered, his voice cracking. “I want to call my attorney! I demand to speak to my legal counsel!”

“You are welcome to call any lawyer you like,” Miller replied evenly, sliding a document across the table. “However, your corporate accounts are frozen. Your personal credit cards have been declined. Your luxury penthouse has been seized under asset forfeiture laws pending investigation. Furthermore, your primary legal counsel, Marcus & Sterling, just dropped you as a client the moment they saw the digital trail of tax evasion attached to your firm.”

Ryan looked down at the paper. It wasn't just a freeze order; it was a comprehensive breakdown of every single illicit transaction he had conducted over the past four years. Every hidden bonus, every kickback from fraudulent corporate real estate deals, every penny skimmed from the joint accounts he shared with Emily—all laid bare with undeniable, mathematical precision.

“How?” Ryan whispered, staring blankly at the pages. “Who did this? Who has this kind of clearance?”

“Your father-in-law,” Miller said, leaning back in his chair with a faint, respectful nod toward the dossier. “Before he retired, David was the premier forensic investigator in the state attorney general's office. People in the financial sector spend their whole lives trying not to cross his path. You didn't just cross his path, Ryan. You stole his daughter's life, and then you tried to destroy her. You essentially handed a loaded cannon to a master marksman.”

Ryan slumped forward, his forehead hitting the cold steel table. The untouchable titan of the financial world was gone, replaced by a terrified man realizing that his entire empire was built on a foundation of sand, and the tide had just come in.
