Chapter 9 - Healing and Closure

The trial concluded just before the winter holidays. Because of Sarah and Jason's comprehensive confessions and the overwhelming pile of forensic evidence, there was no dramatic courtroom battle.
Jason was sentenced to thirty-five years without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security state penitentiary for armed robbery, conspiracy, and child endangerment. Sarah received a twenty-year sentence for financial embezzlement, grand larceny, and felony child neglect.
I attended the final sentencing hearing alone, leaving Emily at home baking gingerbread cookies with my mother. When the judge brought down the heavy wooden gavel, signaling the end of the legal chapter, I felt no anger or hatred—only a profound, quiet emptiness that quickly gave way to absolute peace.
As I walked out of the courthouse steps into the crisp winter air, the sky was a brilliant, unblemished blue. I pulled out my phone and dialed home.
"Hey, sweetheart," I said when Emily's bright voice answered on the first ring.
"Daddy! When are you coming home? Grandma says the cookies are ready to go in the oven!"
"I'm on my way right now, Em," I replied, smiling so widely my cheeks ached. "Do you want me to bring anything special on the way back?"
"Just you, Daddy. And maybe some extra chocolate chips."

"Consider it done. I'll be there in twenty minutes."
I hung up the phone, slid it into my coat pocket, and walked toward my car with a light, confident step. The past was buried deep beneath the concrete and steel of prison walls, where it could never reach us again.
