Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation
Three months passed before the word "normal" began to feel like something we could actually touch again.
Rebuilding a shattered life isn't something that happens overnight. Emily spent weeks seeing a specialized child psychologist twice a week, working through the lingering trauma of those dark days behind the shed. At first, she flinched at the sound of a slamming door or the sight of a locked gate. But children possess a resilient, miraculous capacity for healing, especially when surrounded by unconditional love.
We moved into a bright, airy coastal apartment twenty miles away from the old neighborhood. Every morning, the salty breeze drifted through our windows, and every afternoon, I picked Emily up from her new elementary school, where she had quickly made a circle of loyal friends who didn't care about anything other than playing tag on the playground.
On a crisp Saturday morning in late October, Emily bounded down the stairs of our apartment with a stack of colorful drawing pads and a box of freshly sharpened colored pencils.
"Dad! Look what I drew in art class!" she announced proudly, shoving a piece of heavy construction paper into my hands.
I looked down. It was a crayon drawing of our new life: a bright yellow apartment building with large, open windows, a sparkling blue ocean in the background, and two stick figures standing side by side holding hands—one big, one small, both with enormous, beaming smiles. In the corner, a cheerful sun shone down with cartoonish rays.
"This is incredible, Em," I choked out, feeling a lump rise in my throat as I knelt down to eye level with her. "Can I frame this and put it right above my desk?"

"Only if you promise to put a gold star on it," she giggled, her eyes sparkling with the bright, carefree joy that a ten-year-old was always meant to have.
"Done," I smiled, sweeping her up into my arms and spinning her around until we both collapsed laughing onto the living room rug.
