Chapter 6 - Secrets of the Green Pool

The sun began its slow descent behind the rooftops, casting long, bruised shadows across the suburban lawn. A generator roared to life, powering heavy floodlights that the crime scene technicians had set up around the perimeter of the pool.
I stood behind the yellow police tape, shivering slightly despite the warm evening air. Inside the ambulance, paramedics had finished checking Emily over; she had minor dehydration, scrapes, and bruises, but miraculously no life-threatening injuries. She had fallen asleep wrapped in three woolen blankets, exhausted from days of terror.
Detective Miller walked over to me, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. His face looked pale under the harsh glare of the floodlights.
"Michael," Miller said quietly, motioning me away from the murmuring crowd of neighbors. "You need to prepare yourself."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What did they find in the pool, Miller?"
"Three heavy-duty contractor bags," he said, lowering his voice so the technicians wouldn't overhear. "The dive team brought them up ten minutes ago. We cut the first one open."
He paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. "It wasn't household garbage, Michael. It was industrial weights, stolen jewelry, and cash—hundreds of thousands of dollars in banded, water-damaged hundred-dollar bills. But that's not the worst part."
"What else?" I whispered, my mouth feeling dry as dust.
"The third bag," Miller said, his eyes locking onto mine. "It contained a laptop, an external hard drive wrapped in industrial plastic wrap, and a ledger written in Sarah's handwriting detailing systematic financial extortion and embezzlement from the local elderly care facility where she worked as an administrator."
I stared at him in stunned silence. "Embezzlement? That's why she locked Emily up?"

"It's worse than that," Miller corrected grimly. "One of the elderly patients—an extremely wealthy retired judge who lived alone—died under suspicious circumstances three weeks ago. Sarah was his primary caretaker. Jason was the one who carried out the physical intimidation of anyone who got too close. When Emily walked in on them counting the stolen cash in the basement last Friday morning, Sarah panicked. They locked her in the dog cage to keep her quiet while they figured out how to launder the rest of the money and flee the country."
The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. Emily hadn't just been locked away for misbehaving; she had been made a prisoner because she was an accidental witness to a string of horrific felonies.
