Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

The fall of Victor Vane sent shockwaves through the city's financial and political elites. Over the next forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors unraveled the massive web of corruption he had built over three decades.

With Vane behind bars without bail, his co-conspirators began turning on each other like rats in a trap.

Inside the county jail, Vivian Vance was the first to break. Faced with thirty years in federal prison for attempted murder, elder abuse, and wire fraud, she surrendered full access to her private offshore accounts in exchange for a plea bargain.

I met her in the visitor’s room of the correctional facility on Friday afternoon. She sat across from me in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her manicured nails chipped and dirty. The arrogant woman who had pressed her red heel into my father’s shoulder was gone; in her place was a broken, terrified criminal.

"Isabella..." Vivian wept, pressing her hands against the glass partition. "Please... talk to the prosecutor. Tell them I was forced! Victor threatened me! He told me he would kill Marcus if I didn't give Richard the drugs!"

I sat down calmly, holding the phone receiver to my ear. "You didn't look forced when you were laughing while my father spilled his tea, Vivian. You didn't look forced when you let Marcus wear his watch."

"It was Marcus’s idea!" she sobbed hysterically, willing to throw her own son under the bus to save herself. "He wanted the money! He wanted the status! I was just trying to protect our future!"

"Marcus has already signed a confession, Vivian," I said coldly. "He gave the prosecutors full details on how you forged the proxy signatures, how you manipulated the medical staff, and how you funneled the stolen company money into your private accounts."

Vivian gasped, her eyes wide with betrayal. "That ungrateful little..."

"You and Marcus deserve each other," I said, my voice as hard as diamond. "All the money you stole from Hale Construction has been recovered. The mansion is back under my father’s name. And every contract you tried to invalidate has been legally restored."

"What about me?" she whimpered. "I have nothing left..."

"You have twenty years in state prison to think about what you did," I replied. "And when you get out, you won't have a single penny to your name."

I hung up the receiver, stood up, and walked away without looking back.

Next was Julian Croft. Abandoned by Vane and stripped of his corporate standing, Julian pleaded guilty to all charges of embezzlement and insider trading. The board of directors unanimously voted to confiscate his equity shares, which were redistributed to the company's pension fund, securing the retirements of hundreds of working-class employees whose livelihoods he had put at risk.

By Saturday evening, the legal battles were finally over. The storm had passed, leaving Hale Construction stronger, cleaner, and more stable than it had ever been in its history.

I returned to the hospital to check on my father. He was sitting up in an armchair near the window, dressed in a comfortable sweater, watching the sunset cast golden light over the city.

"Bella," Dad said, smiling softly as I walked in. "I saw the news. Vane’s indictment was made official."

"It’s over, Dad," I said, kneeling beside his chair and resting my head on his knee, just as I used to do when I was a young girl. "The company is safe. The house is safe. They can never hurt you again."

Dad stroked my hair with his trembling hand, tears welling in his eyes. "I lost six years of your life because I was too proud to ask for help, Bella. I thought I was protecting you by letting you go."

May you like

"You did protect me, Dad," I whispered. "You gave me the strength to stand on my own feet. You taught me how to fight."

He looked out the window at the skyline he had helped build. "Now... it’s time to rebuild what really matters."
