Chapter 5 - The Financial Dragnet

The arrest of Victor Vane’s primary enforcer sent shockwaves through the city's underground networks. By Thursday morning, Vane knew his physical leverage was shattered. But a man of his stature still held massive financial leverage over Hale Construction.

At 9:00 AM, my assistant walked into my new CEO office at Hale Tower, her face pale. "Isabella... Vane Financial just shorted thirty percent of our public stock. They’re floating rumors to the press that Hale Construction is insolvent and facing federal indictment. Our stock price is dropping like a stone."

I stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline. "He’s trying to trigger a margin call on our bank loans. If our stock drops below forty dollars a share, the central bank has the right to seize our collateral—including the port land."

"It’s already at forty-two dollars," she said, her voice shaking. "We have less than three hours before the market closes for the afternoon break."

"Call a emergency press conference for 11:00 AM," I commanded calmly. "And get me on the phone with the Managing Director of First National Bank."

For the next two hours, my office turned into a war room. My team of forensic accountants worked frantically, compiling every scrap of evidence we had gathered from Vivian’s confiscated laptops, Julian’s email archives, and the offshore paper trail leading directly to Vane Financial.

At 11:00 AM, I stepped onto the podium in the main auditorium of Hale Tower. Dozens of news cameras flashed, reporters shouted questions, and live-stream feeds broadcasted my face to trading floors across the country.

"Quiet down, please," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone.

The room fell silent.

"Over the past forty-eight hours," I began, "there have been deliberate, coordinated attempts to destabilize Hale Construction through criminal extortion, corporate sabotage, and market manipulation."

I clicked a remote control in my hand, illuminating a massive projection screen behind me.

"What you see on this screen is a map of illegal market transactions executed over the past six hours by shell companies owned directly by Victor Vane," I announced. "These companies engaged in illegal short-selling based on false rumors that Vane himself manufactured."

The press room erupted in hushed whispers.

"Furthermore," I continued, clicking to the next slide, "I am officially announcing that Hale Construction has closed a new fifty-year joint venture with the Global Infrastructure Fund, backed by an immediate capital injection of two hundred million dollars."

The reporters gasped. The stock tickers displayed on the side monitors froze, then suddenly exploded upward as algorithmic trading bots caught the news.

"This capital injection," I added, staring straight into the main network camera, "completely eliminates all corporate debt, solidifies our ownership of the deep-water port project, and renders all hostile short positions mathematically bankrupt. To Mr. Vane and his associate investors: your margin calls are coming due in five minutes."

On the trading floor live feeds, the price of Hale Construction stock skyrocketed from forty-two dollars to eighty-five dollars in a matter of minutes. Victor Vane’s short positions were decimated, wiping out over one hundred and fifty million dollars of his firm's capital in a single trading session.

My phone buzzed on the podium. It was an unlisted, private number.

I answered it right there on stage, holding the receiver close to my ear while keeping my eyes on the cameras.

"You’re very clever, Isabella," Victor Vane’s cold, smooth voice came through the line. "You saved your father’s company. You ruined my short position. But you forgot one thing."

"I don't forget anything, Victor," I said quietly.

"I still hold the original bearer bonds issued by your father twenty years ago," Vane said, his tone dripping with poisonous satisfaction. "One hundred million dollars in debt, secured by the very house your mother died in. I am executing a foreclosure order on the Hale Manor at noon today. By sunset, I will tear that house down to the dust."

I smiled softly into the microphone. "Try it, Victor. I'm already sitting in the living room."
