Chapter 7 - Shadows Fade

That evening, after Lily had fallen asleep upstairs clutching Captain Fluffy, Clara and I sat out on the wide wooden porch. The night air was crisp and cool, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves and distant pine forests.
Clara leaned her head against my shoulder, her fingers intertwined with mine. The bruises on her hands had faded long ago, leaving behind smooth, unblemished skin, but I still occasionally found myself tracing them out of an instinctive, protective reflex.
"Do you ever think about the house?" Clara asked softly, breaking the quiet hum of the crickets.
"Sometimes," I admitted, looking out at the dark silhouette of the tree line. "I remember the fear, Clara. The feeling of walking through that front door and thinking I was too late. I don't think that memory will ever completely go away."
"Me neither," she whispered. "Every time I look at a lock, my heart skips a beat. But then I look around this kitchen, and I look at Lily sleeping upstairs... and I remember that we won. We survived them."
"We did," I said, turning to kiss the top of her head. "They tried to break us, to strip everything away and treat us like possessions. But they underestimated the one thing they could never control or quantify."
"What's that?"

"Love," I said simply. "Real love doesn't bargain, it doesn't hoard, and it doesn't poison. It protects."
Clara smiled in the darkness, shifting closer so that there was no space left between us. The ghosts of Evelyn and Daniel felt a million miles away now, reduced to nothing more than distant shadows swallowed up by the warmth of our new life.
