Chapter 4 - The House of Secrets

Twenty-four hours later, Clara and Lily were stable enough to be discharged into my care, though Dr. Reyes insisted on a comprehensive follow-up plan. Instead of returning to the house immediately—which was now an active crime scene under police seal—I took them to a quiet, secure apartment downtown that my firm maintained for corporate guests.

While Clara and Lily slept safely in the master bedroom, I met with Detective Miller, the lead investigator assigned to the case. We met in the lobby of the apartment building, the morning sun casting sharp shadows across the concrete.

"Mr. Ward, the lab technicians finished pulling the data from Miss Button’s memory card," Detective Miller said, handing me a heavy manila folder. "And frankly, what's on there is enough to put your mother away for a very long time."

I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the printed transcript summaries. "What did they find?"

"It recorded everything over the last seventy-two hours," Miller explained. "Your mother wasn't just withholding food; she was systematically poisoning your daughter's water and your wife's meals with a concentrated agricultural pesticide she smuggled into the house in an old vitamin bottle. There are audio clips of her mocking them while they begged for food. And..."

The detective hesitated, his expression hardening. "There's audio of your brother, Daniel. He came by yesterday morning, before you returned. They were discussing how to handle the aftermath if Clara didn't wake up."

My stomach clenched. "Daniel was there while they were dying?"

"He knew," Miller confirmed. "He told your mother that the timing was perfect because of your upcoming business trip and the corporate audit your firm is facing. They had a plan to liquidate your emergency accounts, declare Clara mentally incompetent, and use the ensuing legal chaos to seize full guardianship of Lily and control of your assets."

"Eighty-four thousand dollars was transferred from my emergency account," I said coldly.

"That's just the tip of the iceberg," Miller replied, pulling a financial summary from the folder. "We pulled records on your brother's business. Daniel's firm is millions of dollars in debt due to bad investments and embezzlement. He was facing federal fraud charges. Your mother concocted this entire scheme under the guise of 'family help' to bail him out and secure your wealth before you could notice."

The pieces fell into place with brutal clarity. Evelyn had never come to stay because her pipes were broken. That was a lie designed to get her foot in the door, giving her unrestricted access to our home, our accounts, and our lives. She had played the doting grandmother while acting as a parasite, draining everything I worked for and destroying the people I loved most.

"Where are they now?" I asked.

"Your mother is being held without bail at the county detention center," Miller said. "Charges include attempted murder, child endangerment, financial fraud, and conspiracy. As for Daniel, he was arrested this morning at his office. We found the transfer receipts on his computer. They're going away for a very, very long time, Mr. Ward."

I closed the folder and looked out toward the bustling city street. The nightmare was being dismantled piece by piece. But justice in a courtroom was only the first step. I needed to ensure that the remnants of their toxic influence could never touch my family again.
