Chapter 6 - The New Horizon
Four months later, the autumn leaves were turning golden and red across the rolling hills of Vermont.
We had traded the sterile tension of the city for a sprawling, sunlit farmhouse nestled at the edge of a quiet New England town wrap-around porch, old oak trees, and an enormous, sun-drenched kitchen with a heavy wooden pantry door that had no lock. Never again would a lock exist in our home that wasn't open to everyone inside it.
Clara was busy baking apple pie, the sweet scent of cinnamon and warm crust filling the house. Lily sat at the kitchen island, diligently working on a drawing with a brand-new set of colored pencils, completely absorbed in her art.
I walked up behind Clara, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder. She leaned back against me with a contented sigh, her hands pausing in their work.
"How’s the masterpiece coming along, artist?" I asked, looking over at Lily.
Lily held up her drawing with a proud grin. It was a picture of our new house, complete with the big oak tree, a smiling sun, and four stick figures standing hand in hand: Clara, me, Lily, and a brand-new teddy bear she had named Captain fluffy.
"It's beautiful, bug," I said, walking over to ruffle her hair. "Just perfect."
The trial of Evelyn Ward had concluded a month prior. Without the benefit of Daniel's co-conspiracy or any viable defense against the digital evidence and chemical forensics, Evelyn had been convicted on all counts. The judge had handed down a severe sentence, ensuring she would spend her remaining years behind bars where she could no longer manipulate, control, or harm anyone else.

Daniel had accepted a plea deal in exchange for testifying against some of his other financial associates, but it hadn't saved him from a lengthy prison sentence and total financial ruin. The "family name" they had tried to protect through deceit and cruelty was now entirely extinct, reduced to a footnote in a criminal docket.
And out of those ashes, we had built something indestructible.
