Chapter 5 - The Corporate Counter-Attack

The morning sun streamed through the expansive glass windows of my home office, illuminating stacks of financial reports, legal bindings, and corporate restructuring drafts. I sat behind my mahogany desk, sipping black coffee while reviewing the overnight telemetry reports from Vanguard Holdings.

My phone rang. It was David, the senior head of corporate compliance and an old family friend who had worked alongside my late father.

“Amanda,” David’s grave voice came through the speaker. “I’ve reviewed the forensic audit files Marcus sent over last night. It’s worse than we thought.”

“Go on,” I said calmly, typing a quick command on my laptop to pull up the ledger.

“Richard wasn't just embezzling for personal luxury gifts,” David explained, his tone laced with disgust. “He was systematically siphoning R&D development funds from our primary artificial intelligence project to fund a secret shell corporation registered under Brooke Vance’s name. He was planning a hostile buyout of Vanguard from the inside, using our own capital.”

A cold smile touched my lips. “And let me guess—he used his executive authority as collateral leverage, assuming the board would back him because he’s the face of the division?”

“Exactly. But he made one fatal flaw,” David chuckled darkly. “He forgot that as the majority voting shareholder via Amanda Vanguard Holdings, you retain absolute veto power over any asset transfer exceeding fifty thousand dollars. Every single cent he moved is classified as corporate grand larceny.”

“Lock down the accounts permanently,” I instructed, my voice unwavering. “File the criminal referral with the federal prosecutor’s office by noon. I want a full public board meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine sharp. Send Richard an official termination notice citing breach of fiduciary duty and illegal corporate malfeasance.”

“Consider it done, Amanda. Richard’s career in tech is effectively over. He’ll be lucky if he doesn't spend the next five to ten years in a federal penitentiary.”

“Let justice take its course,” I replied, hanging up the phone.

Just then, the door to my office clicked open. Ethan peeked his head in, clutching his stuffed bunny in one hand and rubbing his sleepy eyes with the other.

“Mommy?” he mumbled.

My expression instantly softened. I stood up from my desk, walking over to scoop him up into my arms. “Good morning, my sweet boy. Did you sleep well?”

“Uh-huh,” he nodded, burying his face in my shoulder. “Can we make pancakes today?”

“We can make the biggest stack of pancakes you’ve ever seen,” I promised, kissing his cheek. “And then we are going to go shopping for all the toys you want, okay?”

Ethan’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Really? Can I get a giant dinosaur?”

May you like

“You can get a whole herd of dinosaurs,” I laughed, feeling a profound sense of liberation wash over me.

Richard was out of our lives. His mother was gone. His mistress had fled. The parasites had been purged from our ecosystem, leaving behind only fertile ground for my son and me to rebuild everything—stronger, safer, and entirely on our own terms.
