Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years later.

The air was crisp and filled with the vibrant energy of a Saturday morning. Vanguard Holdings was thriving as one of the most respected tech and innovation firms in the country, known not only for its cutting-edge AI developments but also for its exemplary corporate culture and extensive philanthropic outreach.

I pulled my luxury SUV into the driveway of our estate, stepping out into the sunlight with a deep breath of fresh air. The house looked magnificent—gardens blooming with vibrant red roses and white hydrangeas, manicured lawns, and the bright sound of laughter echoing from the backyard.

I walked around to the back patio and stopped, a warm, radiant smile spreading across my face.

Ethan was nine years old now. He had grown taller, sharper, and full of athletic energy. Right now, he was practicing soccer drills on the lawn with a local youth coach I had hired, dribbling the ball skillfully past imaginary defenders before launching a clean, powerful shot straight into the net.

“Goal!” Ethan cheered, pumping his fist in the air with a triumphant grin.

The golden retriever puppy from years ago—now a fully grown, majestic family dog—barked happily, chasing after the rolling soccer ball.

Marcus walked out onto the patio, holding two steaming mugs of coffee, and handed one to me.

“He’s getting awfully good at that,” Marcus observed, smiling as he watched Ethan celebrate his goal.

“He gets his tenacity from his mother,” I joked, taking a sip of the warm coffee.

“That’s an understatement,” Marcus laughed softly. “Speaking of which, the foundation’s annual charity gala is set for next Friday. The board has requested that you give the keynote speech regarding our new single-parent housing initiative.”

“I’m ready for it,” I nodded, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment. Building a successful empire was rewarding, but using that power to lift others out of darkness was the true legacy I wanted to leave behind.

Ethan spotted me standing on the patio. His face lit up with a bright, joyful smile, and he waved frantically, dropping the soccer ball and running across the grass toward us.

“Mom! Did you see that goal? I curved it just like you showed me!” he panted, breathless and beaming with pride.

I set my coffee mug down on the patio table, dropped to one knee, and handed him a clean towel to wipe the sweat from his forehead.

“I saw it, sweetie. It was an incredible shot. You’re going to be a pro someday.”

Ethan threw his arms around my neck, giving me a massive, enthusiastic hug. “I love you, Mommy.”

“I love you more than all the stars in the universe, Ethan,” I whispered, kissing the top of his head.

We stood there together in the warm afternoon sunlight—safe, loved, prosperous, and completely unbroken. The dark days of the past were nothing more than a faded shadow, completely erased by the brilliant light of our new reality.

We had made it. Together. Happily ever after.
