Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Storm

Richard’s laughter echoed off the high ceilings, hollow and dripping with arrogant certainty. He took another slow sip of his bourbon, as if my declaration was nothing more than a toddler’s tantrum matching Ethan's.

“You’ve always been dramatic, Amanda,” Richard said, shaking his head. He looked down at Brooke, whose smile had widened into something sharp and predatory. “She thinks because her name is on the deed, she holds all the cards. She forgets who actually built the life we enjoy.”

I didn’t argue. Arguing with a man high on his own delusion is a waste of precious oxygen. Instead, I turned my attention inward, calming the rapid thumping of my heart. Ethan buried his face in my neck, his little hands gripping the fabric of my blazer so tightly his knuckles turned white.

“Shh, baby,” I murmured against his temple. “Mommy’s here. You’re safe now.”

Brooke adjusted the pink lace blanket around the baby, stepping forward with an air of condescending pity. “You really shouldn’t coddle him, Amanda. Richard is right. Children need boundaries. Chloe, on the other hand, is so peaceful. Aren't you, sweet girl?” She cooed down at the infant.

My gaze snapped to Brooke. “And who, exactly, gave you permission to speak in my home, let alone stand in my living room?”

Brooke’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but Vivian was quick to step in, her voice dripping with venom. “Watch your tone, Amanda. Brooke is Richard’s partner in this new chapter of our family. She gave him a true heir—a daughter who carries the Whitman grace, unlike this... mistake.”

She gestured dismissively toward Ethan.

The word mistake reverberated in the room. Richard didn’t even flinch. He didn’t defend his son. He just stood there, looking at me with cold, dead eyes that I hadn’t seen when we exchanged vows five years ago.

“Pack your bags, Richard,” I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Richard arched an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. You, your mother, your mistress, and your precious illegitimate child have precisely one hour to gather your things and get out of my house.”

Vivian gasped, clutching her pearls as if I had physically struck her. “Have you lost your mind? This is our family home! Richard is a partner at Vanguard! You’re just a minor shareholder in a lifestyle you could never afford on your own!”

Richard stepped forward, his expression hardening. The casual amusement was gone, replaced by the ugly flash of a man whose ego was bruised. “Enough, Amanda. This house was bought during our marriage. Legally, half of it belongs to me. And as for the company—well, let’s just say my name carries weight where it matters. You want to play games? Fine. But don't expect me to coddle you when you find yourself locked out with nowhere to go.”

He still didn't know.

He honestly believed that Vanguard, the high-flying tech consultancy firm he bragged about at every dinner party, was his kingdom. He forgot who handed him the keys to the kingdom on our wedding day. He forgot whose family trust funded the initial seed capital. He forgot the subtle fine print he signed during our corporate restructure last year—the one where he traded voting shares for liquidity to buy his luxury sports car.

“One hour, Richard,” I repeated, turning toward the grand staircase with Ethan in my arms. “If you aren’t gone by then, I’ll have security drag you out.”

“You arrogant little bitch—” Richard snarled, taking a step toward me.

Before he could reach the bottom step, the front doors swung open. Standing in the doorway was Marcus, my father’s longtime personal attorney, flanked by two towering private security guards in sharp black suits.

Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, casting a chillingly polite glance around the opulent room.

“Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Whitman,” Marcus said smoothly. “Or should I say... Mr. Whitman and guests? It appears my services are required sooner than expected.”

Richard froze, the color draining slightly from his face as he recognized the lawyer who had drafted every major contract of our lives.

“Marcus? What are you doing here?” Richard demanded.

Marcus stepped inside, ignoring Richard entirely as he looked up at me. “Good evening, Amanda. I have the preliminary asset freeze documents ready for your signature. Shall we begin the eviction proceedings?”
