Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at the Bellamy

An hour later, the top floor of the Bellamy Grand Hotel was surrounded.

Julian Vale had retreated to the very same private dining room where Dante’s birthday had been held three weeks prior. He had gathered the last seven loyal captains who hadn't yet fled the country, desperate to forge a last-ditch defense strategy. They sat around the massive mahogany table, drinking nervously, their guns resting on the white linen napkins.

"Julian, this is crazy," Marco Ross stammered, pacing near the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking Lake Michigan. "The street crews aren't answering. The New York families have completely cut us off. Dante has shut down every dollar we have."

"Shut up!" Julian screamed, slamming his hands down. "He’s a man in a chair! He’s broken! Once my men bring his little waitress and her kid here, we’ll have all the leverage we need! He’ll give us back the accounts, he’ll step down, or he’ll watch them—"

The heavy double doors of the private dining room swung open.

Every man in the room whipped their guns out, pointing them at the entrance.

Silas stepped in first, holding an assault rifle, flanked by twelve heavily armed men wearing black tactical gear. But they didn't shoot. They simply formed a double line, clearing a pathway.

Through the center of the path, rolling calmly into the room, came Dante Vale.

He wore a bespoke, dark charcoal suit, perfectly tailored, a crimson rose pinned to his lapel. Sitting on his lap, completely calm and holding a brand-new instant camera, was seven-year-old Lily. Elena stood directly behind Dante’s wheelchair, her hand resting trustingly on his shoulder, protected by two elite guards.

The silence in the room was deafening.

Julian’s hand trembled so violently he almost dropped his weapon. He looked at Dante, who sat at the end of the long table—the exact same spot he had occupied three weeks ago when the room was empty.

"Dante..." Julian squeaked, his voice cracking.

"You sat in my chairs, Julian," Dante said softly, his deep voice carrying effortless authority through the grand hall. "Three weeks ago, I invited twenty-eight men to celebrate my life. Not one of you showed up. You thought because my spine was damaged, my reign was over. You thought a King is made of bone and muscle."

Dante motioned slightly with his hand.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, red and blue lights began flashing across the street below, but they weren't police lights. They were the private security vehicles of the New York and Detroit Syndicate heads—the ultimate elders of the national commission.

"I didn't invite you tonight, Julian," Dante continued calmly. "I called a meeting of the Commission. And they have already voted."

Marco Ross looked out the window, saw the black SUVs belonging to the national bosses, and immediately laid his gun down on the table. One by one, the remaining captains dropped their weapons, stepping away from Julian as if he were radioactive.

"You traitors!" Julian screamed at his men. He whipped his gun around, aiming it directly at Dante’s chest. "I’ll kill you! I’ll take over myself!"

Lily didn't flinch. She raised her plastic camera, pointed it straight at Julian, and pressed the button.

FLASH!

The blinding light caught Julian completely off guard. He blinked, startled, his vision momentarily washed in white.

In that single second of distraction, Silas stepped forward, raised his weapon, and fired a single non-lethal shot through Julian’s right shoulder.

Julian screamed, dropping his gun, falling to his knees on the thick carpet, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

Dante rolled his wheelchair forward until he was stopping directly in front of his kneeling, weeping cousin. Dante reached down, pulled the instant photo as it ejected from Lily’s camera, and looked at it.

It showed Julian on his knees, defeated, terrified, surrounded by his disarmed men.

Dante flipped the fresh photo over, pulled a silver pen from his jacket pocket, and wrote three words on the back.

He tossed the photo onto the floor next to Julian’s face.

"You wanted my chair, Julian," Dante said, his voice cold as a blizzard. "Now you can spend the rest of your life in a federal prison cell thinking about what you lost."

May you like

Julian looked down at the photo through his tears. Written on the back in fresh black ink were the words:

It is finished.
