Chapter 6 - The Lion Leaves His Den

It was a cold, rainy Tuesday night when the call came through to Dante’s private line.
Dante was in his study, reviewing ledgers that detailed the total financial ruin of sixteen of his former lieutenants. Silas stood quietly by the window, keeping watch over the foggy grounds of the estate.
The phone rang. Dante picked it up on the second ring.
"Speak," Dante commanded.
"Boss," came the urgent, breathless voice of Victor, one of the covert operatives assigned to guard Elena’s apartment. "We have a situation. Two vehicles just pulled up outside the girl’s building. Recognized the plates—they belong to Marco Ross’s crew. They're breaching the rear entrance now."
Dante’s blood ran cold. The icy composure that had sustained him through sixteen months of paralysis shattered, replaced by an ancient, terrifying rage.
"Status of Elena and Lily?" Dante asked, his voice dropping to a register so low it made Silas turn around instantly.
"They're inside their third-floor apartment. They don't know what's happening yet. We're moving in to intercept, but they brought heavy firepower, Boss. At least eight men."
"Hold them off," Dante snapped. "I am coming."
Silas stepped forward, his eyes wide with shock. "Boss? You can't go. It’s an active kill zone. Let me take a strike team—"
"Silas," Dante interrupted, reaching into the bottom drawer of his desk. He pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol—a weapon he hadn't touched since the night he was shot in Cicero. He racked the slide with a single, practiced motion. "That child brought me a rose when my own blood left me to rot. That woman sang to me when I was a ghost. If Julian thinks he can use my humanity against me, I will show him why I was called the Winter King."
"Boss, your wheelchair..." Silas started, his voice thick with concern.
"Then load me into the modified SUV and drive fast," Dante ordered, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "Tonight, the wheelchair doesn't matter. Tonight, Chicago burns."
Ten minutes later, two heavy, armored SUVs tore through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, blowing through red lights at ninety miles per hour. Inside the lead vehicle, Dante sat secured in his specialized leather seat, his gun resting on his lap, his gaze fixed on the storm outside.
For sixteen months, he had hidden from the world. He had allowed his body’s failure to dictate his existence. He had let men pity him.
No more.
At the apartment complex, chaos had already broken out. The sound of muffled gunshots echoed through the dark alleyways as Dante’s security team engaged Julian’s hitmen in the rain.
Julian’s men had managed to blow open the door to Elena’s apartment. Elena was screaming, shielding Lily behind her in the small kitchen, holding a butcher knife with white knuckles as three armed men kicked open the door.
"Get the kid!" the lead gunman barked, reaching out with a leather-gloved hand to grab Lily.
"Touch her and you die!" Elena screamed, swinging the knife wildly, cutting the gunman’s jacket.
The gunman swore, raising his silenced pistol toward Elena’s chest. "Bitch—"
BOOM!
The front door didn't just open; it exploded off its hinges.
A massive, armored figure—Silas—charged into the room, firing a high-caliber shotgun that threw the lead gunman back into the hallway like a ragdoll. Behind Silas, rolling smoothly through the shattered doorway, came Dante Vale.
The remaining two gunmen froze in absolute shock. They had spent months being told that Dante Vale was a helpless cripple hiding in a mansion.
They were staring at a monster.
Dante didn't say a word. He raised his Sig Sauer with a cold, mechanical precision and fired twice. The two gunmen dropped to the linoleum floor instantly, neutralized before they could even raise their weapons.
The apartment went dead silent, save for the heavy patter of rain outside the shattered window and Elena’s terrified, ragged breathing.
Dante lowered his weapon. He turned his wheelchair toward the kitchen corner, where Elena was hyperventilating, holding a sobbing Lily tightly against her chest.
Dante’s face softened immediately. The killer vanished; the man returned.
"Are you hurt?" Dante asked gently, his voice smooth and steady.
Elena looked at the bodies on her floor, then at the smoking gun in Dante's hand, and finally at his eyes. She didn't see a villain. She saw the man who had sat alone with thirty-nine candles.

"Dante..." she whispered, using his name for the first time. "They... they came for Lily."
"I know," Dante said quietly. He extended his hand toward them. "And they will never, ever come for her again. Come with me. Both of you. It's time to end this."
