Chapter 5 - The Innocent Target

Three weeks passed. To the outside world, Chicago seemed calm, but beneath the surface, a war was raging in the dark.

Dante had executed a financial masterclass. Without firing a single shot, he used his deep-rooted connections, shadow accounts, and control over international shipping routes to choke the financial life out of his rebellious captains. Shipments were seized by customs through anonymous tips; bank accounts were frozen; protection rackets collapsed. The twenty-eight men who had refused to sit at Dante's birthday table were now drowning in millions of dollars of debt, their authority crumbling day by day.

Julian Vale was losing his mind. He was hiding in a fortified safehouse, surrounded by paranoid bodyguards, watching his empire disintegrate around him.

"How is he doing this?!" Julian screamed at Marco Ross, throwing an iPad across the room. "He’s in a damn wheelchair! He hasn't left his house in three weeks! How is he cutting off my supply lines?!"

"It’s the photo, Julian," Marco said nervously, his hands shaking as he lit a cigarette. "The photo proved he wasn't broken. It proved he was laughing at us. Half the street crews have defected back to him because they think he’s playing some grand master strategy. And... we found out who took the picture."

Julian spun around, his eyes wild. "Who?"

"It wasn't an intelligence agency or a rival mob," Marco said weakly. "It was a kid. A seven-year-old girl whose mother works room service at the Bellamy Hotel. They stumbled into the private dining room while Dante was sitting there alone."

Julian froze. A slow, sickening smile spread across his face.

"A waitress and a kid," Julian breathed, a desperate, dark light glittering in his eyes. "Dante let them sit at his table. He gave them money. My spies at the hotel said he had a private car drop them home."

"Julian, don't," Marco warned, stepping back. "You know Dante’s rule. No civilians. No women, no kids. If you touch them, he will hunt us to the ends of the earth."

"Dante is already hunting us!" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto a glass table. "He’s destroying us piece by piece! He cares about these nobodies? Good. That means they're his weakness. A man who spent sixteen months hiding in the dark finally showed a heartbeat. And I am going to stop it."

Meanwhile, across town, Elena was sitting in her small, spotless kitchen, staring at a letter that had arrived in the mail that morning.

It was a full scholarship acceptance letter for Lily to attend St. Jude’s Academy—the most prestigious, expensive private school in the state. Attached to it was an official document stating that her apartment rent had been paid in full for the next decade by an "anonymous philanthropic foundation."

Elena sat at the table, her hands covering her mouth, tears welling in her eyes. She knew instantly who had done this. It wasn't an anonymous foundation. It was the terrifying, lonely man from the thirty-ninth birthday room.

"Mommy, look!" Lily came running out of her bedroom, wearing her favorite pink sweater, holding her little instant camera. "I have two pictures left! Can we go to the park?"

"Oh, baby..." Elena pulled Lily into a tight hug, crying softly into her daughter's hair. "We're going to be okay. We're finally going to be okay."

She had no idea that outside her apartment building, sitting in an unmarked black sedan, two of Julian’s hitmen were watching her front door through pair of binoculars, waiting for the sun to go down.
