Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Three months later.
The high wooden fence that had once separated Nia's modest yard from the looming mansion was completely gone. In its place stood a lush, seamless expanse of green lawn, dotted with flower beds, a wooden swing set, and a brand-new playpen.
The "murder mansion" was no longer dark or terrifying. The imposing iron gates were left open, allowing sunlight to flood the courtyard. The black security SUVs were gone, replaced by a silver station wagon and a cheerful red tricycle parked by the front steps.
Nia stood on her renovated back deck, sipping fresh orange juice. The warm afternoon sun washed over her, making her skin glow. She looked out over the yard, where a joyful scene was unfolding.
Leo was sprinting across the grass, squealing with laughter as he chased a giant black shape. Thor, fully recovered and wearing a bright blue bandana around his neck, trotted lazily beside the toddler, keeping his pace painfully slow so the little boy could "catch" him. In Thor's mouth was Mr. Bun Bun.
"I got it! I got Mr. Bun Bun!" Leo cheered, tumbling onto the soft grass. Thor immediately dropped to his belly, licking the toddler's face until Leo dissolved into giggles.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around Nia’s waist from behind, pulling her close. Matteo rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her vanilla shampoo.
"They're going to tire each other out," Matteo murmured, his voice warm and relaxed. "Which means we might actually get a peaceful dinner tonight."
Nia leaned back against his chest, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "You look too comfortable for a retired logistics mogul."
"I am comfortable," Matteo smiled, wrapping his hands over hers. "For the first time in my life, I don't have to look over my shoulder."
It was true. The Valenti syndicate had been completely dismantled, its leaders serving life sentences in federal prison. Matteo had officially stepped down from his corporate empire, handing over control to trusted advisors like Elena, while retaining his vast fortune to establish the Lorenzo Rossi Children's Foundation—a global charity dedicated to protecting vulnerable children and orphans.
Footsteps echoed on the deck stairs. Zoe strutted up, wearing sunglasses, a bright yellow sundress, and holding a tray of freshly baked cupcakes.
"Okay, power couple," Zoe announced, setting the tray down. "The barbecue is officially ready. And I must say, having a former mafia boss grill steaks is an absolute game-changer. The man knows his cuts."
Matteo chuckled, shaking his head. "It's all in the marinade, Zoe."
"Whatever it is, it's art," Zoe declared, grabbing a cupcake. "By the way, Nia, did you see the mail? A package arrived for Leo from Italy."
Nia raised an eyebrow, looking at Matteo. "More toys?"
Matteo smirked innocently. "Just a small wooden train set. Handcrafted in Tuscany."
May you like
"Matteo, his room is already full of toys!" Nia laughed, swatting his arm playfully. "You're spoiling him!"
"I'm not spoiling him," Matteo said softly, his eyes softening as he looked out at the little boy rolling in the grass with the dog. "I'm just making up for lost time."
