Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Past Revealed

The revelation hung heavy in the high-tech bunker, punctuated only by the hum of servers and Thor's steady, sleeping breaths. Nia leaned back against the counter, her mind racing as she pieced together the fragments of the past week.
"Your nephew..." Nia murmured softly. "Is he...?"
"He died in my arms four years ago," Matteo said, his voice dropping an octave, raw with a pain that years of power and wealth hadn't erased. "He was three years old. The Valenti syndicate targeted my family to seize control of our shipping routes. I spent four years dismantling their network, hunting down every man responsible. This house was meant to be my final stronghold while I finished the job."
He looked toward the ceiling, in the direction of Nia's house. "I saw your son in the yard last week. Running through the sprinklers. He has the same laugh Lorenzo had. The same stubborn streak." He turned his gaze back to Nia, a rare softness touching the hard lines of his mouth. "Thor recognized it too. Dogs know things humans refuse to see."
Nia felt a lump form in her throat. The anger she had harbored toward her intimidating neighbor evaporated, replaced by a deep, aching empathy. She knew what it was like to feel fiercely protective of a child—she lived that reality every single day as a single mother trying to build a safe world for Leo.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I judged you. I thought you were just some arrogant billionaire who didn't care about the people around him."
"I let you think that," Matteo replied, stepping closer until he was standing just a foot away from her. "It's safer for people to fear me. Fear keeps them distant. Distance keeps them alive."
He reached out, his long fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently brushing a strand of wet hair away from her face. His touch was surprisingly gentle, sending a sudden, electric shiver down Nia’s spine.
"But you didn't stay distant," he murmured, searching her eyes. "You marched onto my property and demanded a wet rabbit."
Nia offered a small, breathless smile. "I told you. Don't mess with a mama bear."
The moment was shattered by a sharp beep from Elena's console. The woman in black looked up, her expression grim. "Boss. We have a problem. The intruders didn't just target us. Before they pulled back, one of their scouts crossed your perimeter fence."
Elena brought up a thermal camera feed on the main screen. Nia’s heart plummeted into her stomach.
The thermal image showed a shadowy figure standing on her back deck, prying open the glass sliding door that she had left unlocked in her rush to save Thor.
"Leo," Nia gasped, her face draining of color.

Without waiting for another word, she turned and sprinted toward the basement exit.
"Nia, wait!" Matteo shouted, drawing his firearm and pursuing her into the night.
