Chapter 7 - The Confrontation
The peace was short-lived.
Marcus Vance, realizing that Nathan was completely untethered from his business ambitions, decided to make a desperate move. He leaked the story of Nathan's "secret family" to a sensationalist tabloid, attempting to paint Nathan as a hypocrite who abandoned his pregnant wife to build his business empire.
The media storm was instantaneous. Reporters began gathering outside Emma’s apartment building and the twins’ school.
Nathan knew he had to end this once and for all.
He called a press conference at the Harrison Development headquarters. The auditorium was packed with journalists, cameras flashing like a wall of lightning.
Nathan walked onto the stage alone. He didn't have a speech prepared. He didn't have a team of PR crisis managers behind him. He simply stood at the podium and looked directly into the cameras.
"Four years ago," Nathan began, his voice echoing clearly through the hall, "I made the worst decision of my life. I walked away from my wife, Emma, because I was blinded by greed and ambition. I didn't know she was pregnant with our twin sons, Ethan and Noah. But that is no excuse. The fault lies entirely with me."
The room was dead silent, save for the rapid clicking of cameras.
"Recently, I was offered a deal that would have made me a multi-billionaire," Nathan continued. "But that deal would have destroyed the neighborhood where my family lives. It would have put my son's health at risk. So, I walked away. And I would walk away from it a thousand times over. My business career is over. Effective today, I am stepping down as CEO of Harrison Development."
A collective gasp rippled through the audience.

"I am liquidating my shares," Nathan said, his voice steady and resolute. "The proceeds will be used to fund affordable housing initiatives, clean air programs for urban communities, and the modernization of public schools in Chicago. To Marcus Vance, who thought he could use my family to blackmail me: you have failed. My family is not my vulnerability. They are my strength."
He stepped away from the podium and walked off the stage, leaving the media in a frenzy. He had dismantled his life's work in a single speech, and he had never felt more powerful.
