Chapter 6 - Healing Old Wounds

The next day, Emma allowed Nathan into her apartment again. This time, it wasn't for an argument.

The twins were sitting at the kitchen table, eagerly showing Nathan their drawing books. Nathan sat on a chair that was much too small for him, listening with rapt attention as Ethan explained the different layers of the Earth's atmosphere.

"And this is the stratosphere," Ethan said, pointing a crayon at a blue circle. "That's where the big planes fly. But the rockets go way past that, into the thermosphere!"

"Is that right?" Nathan said, his voice filled with genuine wonder. "You know, when I was your age, I wanted to build a rocket that could go all the way to Saturn."

"Why didn't you?" Noah asked, looking up from his drawing.

Nathan looked at Emma, who was leaning against the kitchen counter, watching him quietly. "Because I got distracted by building things on Earth. I forgot to look up at the stars."

The room fell into a quiet, warm silence.

After the boys finished their drawings and went to their room to play with their space toys, Nathan stood up and walked over to Emma.

"I've set up a trust fund for them," Nathan said softly. "It’s completely independent of me. Even if Harrison Development goes bankrupt tomorrow, the boys are taken care of forever. Their medical expenses, their college, their first homes. It's completely controlled by a third-party trustee. You don't have to interact with me to access it."

Emma looked down at her hands. "Why are you doing all of this, Nathan? Really?"

"Because I was a fool," Nathan said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I thought building a legacy meant having my name on skyscrapers. But standing in that bakery, watching you count those coins... I realized that my legacy wasn't in the concrete I poured. It was in the family I abandoned. I don't expect you to forgive me, Emma. I don't expect you to let me back into your life as a husband. But please, let me be their father. Let me protect them."

Emma looked at him, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. The anger that had sustained her for four years began to melt, replaced by a profound sense of relief. She had been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders for so long, and for the first time, someone was offering to share the burden.

"They need a father, Nathan," she said softly. "And I... I can't do this alone anymore."

Nathan felt a weight lift from his shoulders that he hadn't even realized he was carrying. "You don't have to. I'm here."
