Chapter 5 - A Father's Silent Guard

Emma refused Victoria’s offer of a luxury condo, but the warning about Marcus Vance stayed with her. She became hyper-vigilant, keeping the twins close, constantly looking over her shoulder as she walked home from the bus stop.
One evening, as she was carrying a heavy bag of groceries with Ethan and Noah holding onto her coat, she noticed a silver sedan idling near her apartment building. A man in a dark suit was taking photos with a long-lens camera.
Panic surged through her. She pulled the boys close, her heart hammering. "Ethan, Noah, run to the lobby. Now!"
As the boys bolted toward the glass doors of the building, the silver sedan's door opened, and the man stepped out. But before he could take a step toward Emma, a black heavy-duty truck roared around the corner, parking at an angle that completely blocked the silver sedan.
Nathan stepped out of the truck.
He didn't look like the corporate titan in a suit anymore. He wore dark jeans and a simple black jacket. His face was etched with a raw, dangerous fury. He strode directly up to the photographer, grabbing the camera by its lens and ripping it from the man's neck.
"If I ever see you, your car, or anyone associated with Vance Tech near my family again," Nathan growled, his voice low and vibrating with a terrifying intensity, "I will not use the courts. I will personally dismantle your employer's entire life. Do you understand me?"
The photographer, terrified by the sheer physical presence and rage of the man, scrambled back into his car. The silver sedan sped away, tires screeching.
Nathan stood in the street, his chest heaving. Slowly, he turned around to face Emma.
She was standing on the steps of the building, her grocery bag having slipped from her hands. Oranges and apples rolled across the concrete. She was trembling, but her eyes were fixed on Nathan.
"They're after us, aren't they?" she whispered.
Nathan walked up the steps, stopping a respectful distance away. "Vance is desperate. He thought he could find leverage to force me back into the merger. I won't let him touch you, Emma. I swear to you on my life."
Noah, who had been watching from the safety of the lobby, slipped past his mother and walked out onto the steps. He looked at the spilled fruit, then up at Nathan.
"You're the strong man," Noah said, his voice small but brave. "You chased the bad car away."
Nathan felt a tear slip down his cheek. He knelt down on the cold concrete, bringing himself to eye level with the little boy. "I will always chase the bad cars away, buddy. Always."
Noah smiled, then reached down, picked up a rolled apple, and handed it to Nathan. "For you."

Nathan took the apple as if it were a priceless diamond. "Thank you, Noah."
Emma watched the interaction, her defenses crumbling just a fraction. For the first time, she saw not the arrogant billionaire who had abandoned her, but a father desperately trying to find his way back to his children.
