Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the city outside was covered in a pristine blanket of white winter snow.
Inside the penthouse, the silence was completely gone—replaced by the sound that Grant had never known he was missing.
Laughter.
The walls, once stark white and cold, were now splashed with bright colors. A sprawling wooden dollhouse sat in the corner of the living room, surrounded by scattered picture books, pink plush toys, and colorful building blocks. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over a glittering city skyline, catching the bright morning sun and casting a warm, golden glow across the entire room.
Grant sat at the kitchen island, drinking his coffee while reviewing corporate reports on his tablet. But he wasn't alone.
“Grant! Look! I made a crown!”
Norah came running across the hardwood floor, sliding slightly in her fuzzy unicorn socks, holding up a crooked construction-paper crown covered in glitter and mismatched stickers. Her hair was brushed and neat, and the small birthmark near her eye seemed to glow with health and happiness.
Grant set his tablet down immediately, a wide smile breaking across his face—a smile he hadn't worn in half a decade. He bent down as Norah carefully placed the sparkly, oversized crown right on top of his head.
“How do I look?” Grant asked solemnly, turning to look at his reflection in the oven door.
“Like a king!” Norah giggled, clapping her hands.
Hazel walked over more slowly, holding a worn-out storybook in her hands. She stood beside Grant’s chair, looking up at him with quiet affection.
“Can you read this one now?” Hazel asked softly, holding out the book. “The part about the dragon.”
Grant scooped both of them up in one motion, lifting them onto his lap as they shrieked with laughter. The cold, empty rooms of the penthouse were now filled to the brim with life, warmth, and unconditional love.

The legal battles with his mother’s estate had been swift and decisive; Beatrice was facing federal charges with no possibility of bail, her empire dismantled by her own criminal negligence. But Grant didn't care about the money or the estate anymore. He had lost a fortune in status, but he had gained everything that truly mattered.
He opened the book, his daughters snuggled tightly against his chest on either side.
