Chapter 4 - The DNA Conclusive

The penthouse was dead silent except for the faint hum of the HVAC system.

Grant sat at his mahogany desk, the laptop screen casting a pale blue light across his face. Beside him lay the official DNA laboratory results. He had pulled hairs from both girls while they slept, rushing the samples to a private, high-priority genetics lab downtown with Marcus’s help.

He didn't need the papers to know the truth. Looking at Norah’s eyes and Hazel’s quiet determination, he already felt it in his bones. But science demanded proof, and the world outside required undeniable facts.

He opened the encrypted PDF file.

Subject 1 (Norah): Biological relation to Grant Whitmore — 99.99% (Father-Daughter match). Subject 2 (Hazel): Biological relation to Grant Whitmore — 99.99% (Father-Daughter match).

Grant stared at the numbers until they blurred.

They weren't just two random orphans he had pitied in a rainy alley. They weren't just children he had bought out of a desperate humanitarian impulse. They were his flesh and blood. The daughters he had mourned for five agonizing years. The daughters his mother had stolen from his arms before he even had a chance to hold them.

A cold, heavy rage settled deep in his gut. The grief he had carried for half a decade evaporated, replaced by an absolute, blinding clarity.

His mother, Beatrice, was scheduled to host her weekly charity gala at her sprawling estate on the cliffs of Hudson Valley that very evening. She would be surrounded by socialites, politicians, and business elites, sipping champagne and basking in her own untouchable elegance.

Grant closed the laptop, stood up, and walked out to the hallway.

Norah and Hazel were curled up on the sofa watching a cartoon, a bowl of popcorn sitting untouched between them. They looked comfortable—safer than they had ever been—but their eyes still carried the watchful edge of survivors.

Grant walked over, kneeling beside them.

“Girls,” he said, his voice remarkably calm. “How would you like to go on a trip tonight?”

Hazel looked up, chewing her lower lip. “Are we going back to the basement?”

Grant’s heart clenched. He reached out, gently cupping Hazel’s small cheek with his thumb.

“Never,” Grant said fiercely, looking straight into her eyes. “Nobody is ever sending you back anywhere. We are going to visit someone. Someone who made a very big mistake a long time ago. And we are going to get some answers.”

Norah clutched her favorite storybook to her chest. “Will you stay with us?”

“Always,” Grant promised. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again.”
