Chapter 10 - The Happily Ever After

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the winter sky in brilliant shades of violet and gold.
Grant stood by the massive living room window, holding a steaming mug of hot cocoa in one hand. Down on the street below, cars moved slowly through the snowy avenues, their headlights glowing like tiny fireflies in the dusk.
It was the same city that had once felt like an endless prison of noise and cold indifference. But looking at it now, everything felt different. The city wasn't a punishment anymore. It was just the backdrop to a life that had finally been made whole.
Behind him, soft footsteps padded across the rug.
Two small pairs of arms wrapped around his legs, hugging him tight.
Grant set his mug down, turned around, and knelt on the floor. He pulled Norah and Hazel into his arms, burying his face in their soft hair, breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo and fresh laundry.
They weren't ghosts haunting a cold apartment anymore. They were his daughters. They were his future.
“Are you happy, Daddy?” Hazel whispered, looking up at him with those big, beautiful eyes that reminded him so much of Elena.
Grant smiled, feeling a deep, unshakable peace settle into his soul—a peace that would never be broken again.
