Chapter 9 - The Nursery of Light

Spring arrived along the coast with a explosion of color. Wildflowers carpeted the grassy bluffs, and the warm breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and sea salt.

In the second floor of the seaside cottage, sunlight streamed through wide double windows, illuminating a spacious, cozy room.

Unlike the gloomy, dark nursery of the Whitmore estate—with its hidden horrors and pale green walls covered in lies—this nursery was a sanctuary of pure light and warmth.

The walls were painted a warm, creamy golden honey color. Hand-painted murals of ocean waves, friendly whales, and soaring seagulls decorated the corners, created by Claire herself. A handcrafted wooden crib, carved lovingly by Adrian from warm oak, sat in the center of the room.

Beside the window stood a plush, oversized rocking chair, draped with a soft knit blanket.

Adrian stood on a small stepladder, placing the final framed picture onto the wall.

It wasn't a formal, rigid oil portrait like the ones that used to hang in his mother’s mansion. It was a candid, joyful photograph taken on the beach last summer—Claire laughing with her hair blowing in the wind, holding little Hope on her shoulders while Adrian stood beside them, his arm wrapped around his wife's waist, all three of them soaked with ocean water and beaming at the camera.

“Perfect,” Claire’s voice called from the doorway.

Adrian turned around and stepped down from the ladder.

Claire stood at the entrance, leaning lightly against the frame. She was eight months pregnant, her belly round and beautiful beneath a comfortable yellow sundress. Hope stood beside her, holding her mother’s hand proudly, wearing a small shirt that read Best Big Sister.

“Come look at this, sweetie,” Adrian said, bending down to pick up Hope and sitting her on his hip. “What do you think of your little brother’s room?”

Hope looked around the room with wide blue eyes, clapping her hands together happily. “I like the whales, Daddy! Can I show baby brother my teddy bear?”

“Of course you can, sweetheart,” Adrian smiled, kissing her forehead before setting her gently down near the plush rug, where she immediately began arranging her stuffed animals in a circle near the crib.

Claire walked over to the far wall, running her fingers softly across the smooth, golden paint.

Adrian stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his hands gently over the high curve of her pregnant belly. Beneath his palms, he felt a strong, energetic kick from their unborn son.

“He’s active today,” Adrian chuckled softly against her hair.

“He knows his daddy built him the best room in the world,” Claire whispered, leaning back against his strong chest.

She closed her eyes, letting out a long, peaceful breath.

“What are you thinking about, my love?” Adrian asked quietly.

Claire opened her eyes, looking at the bright, sunlit room, then at the photograph on the wall.

“I was remembering the old nursery,” Claire admitted honestly, though her voice carried no fear anymore, only a deep sense of total healing. “I remember lying in that dark room three years ago, carving those letters into the plaster with my ring key, terrified that no one would ever hear me. I was so afraid that our child would grow up in the dark, surrounded by coldness and cruelty.”

Adrian turned her around gently in his arms, taking both of her hands in his.

“You were the light in that dark house, Claire,” Adrian said with fierce, tender devotion. “Your strength saved our family. You left a message on that wall to make sure love would win.”

“And it did,” Claire smiled through happy tears, reaching up to stroke his cheek. “You brought us into the light, Adrian. You chose us over everything else.”

“Choosing you was the easiest decision of my life,” Adrian answered softly. “And every single day, I will keep choosing you.”

Suddenly, Claire squeezed his hands tight, letting out a soft, surprised gasp.

Adrian instantly straightened up, his protective instincts kicking in. “Claire? Is it time?”

Claire looked down at her belly, then back up at Adrian with a glowing, radiant smile. “I think our son doesn't want to wait until next week, Adrian. He wants to see his new room right now.”

Adrian smiled—a wide, confident, ecstatic smile filled with pure joy.

“Marcus!” Adrian called out toward the stairs, where Marcus Vance—now a frequent family guest and Hope’s proud godfather—was downstairs finishing up lunch. “Get the car ready! It’s time!”
