Chapter 4 - The Infiltration of Blackwood

Night fell over the dense pine forests of the Blackwood mountains, bringing a heavy, freezing fog that clung to the winding asphalt roads.
Adrian pulled his dark SUV into the parking lot of a dilapidated diner tucked away near the edge of the state park. Minutes later, a sleek black sedan pulled up alongside him. Marcus Vance stepped out, clad in a tactical jacket, followed by two burly men with calm, focused expressions.
Marcus walked over and gripped Adrian’s arm in a solid, reassuring firm hold.
“You look terrible, man,” Marcus said softly, examining his friend’s pale face and tense shoulders.
“I haven’t slept, and my wife is locked in a private prison,” Adrian replied, his voice raw. “Tell me we have a plan.”
Marcus opened the trunk of his sedan, revealing satellite maps, blueprints, and tactical communications equipment.
“St. Jude’s Sanatorium isn’t listed on standard civilian maps,” Marcus explained, pointing to a high-resolution aerial photograph laid out across the trunk floor. “It was built in the 1970s by a consortium of wealthy families—including your grandfather’s foundation—as a private facility to handle 'sensitive family issues.' Substance abuse, mental breakdowns, illegitimate pregnancies, or heirs who stepped out of line.”
“A gilded cage for corporate secrets,” Adrian said bitterly.
“Exactly,” Marcus nodded. “The main estate is surrounded by an eight-foot stone wall equipped with infrared cameras and motion sensors. The front gate is manned 24/7 by private security. However, the medical wing where they keep high-risk patients is in the north building, near the old service entrance.”
Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a small electronic drive and a folded schematic.
“My tech guy managed to intercept the facility’s internal communications an hour ago,” Marcus continued. “There’s been unusual medical activity reported in the north wing tonight. A team of private obstetricians was brought in two hours ago.”
Adrian felt a cold knife turn in his chest. “What? Why?”
“Claire’s stress levels might have induced early labor,” Marcus said gently, placing a hand on Adrian’s shoulder to keep him grounded. “Adrian, listen to me. If she’s in labor, we don’t have days or hours. We have to move now.”
“How do we get in?”
“The service gate on the east fence receives a supply truck every night at 9:00 PM,” Marcus detailed, pointing to the blueprint. “We drop inside during the gate opening, bypass the perimeter security, and reach the medical building through the old maintenance tunnels beneath the courtyard. Once inside, we secure Claire and get her out to a real hospital.”
“And Eleanor’s guards?”
“If they try to stop us from rescuing a woman held against her will, they are committing federal kidnapping,” Marcus said sternly. “My men are armed with non-lethal weapons and recording devices. Every move they make will be captured on camera for the federal prosecutor.”
Thirty minutes later, hidden under the canopy of pitch-black pine trees, the team approached the perimeter wall of St. Jude’s. The air was frigid, breath fogging up in the dark.
A heavy diesel supply truck rounded the bend, its headlights cutting through the thick mountain mist. As the vehicle slowed down at the service gate, Marcus signaled his team.
With swift, practiced grace, Marcus and his men scrambled over the low wall section near the service entry, using dark canvas blankets to throw over the razor wire. Adrian followed right behind them, his heart hammering in his chest like a war drum.
They landed silently in the wet grass inside the compound.
The facility looked like an ancient Victorian asylum expanded with modern concrete wings—a bleak, sterile structure surrounded by high iron fences and floodlights.
“Tunnel access is right around this corner,” Marcus whispered, gesturing toward a heavy iron cellar door set into the foundation of the old building.
Using a heavy set of lock-picking tools, Marcus breached the rusted lock in under twenty seconds. The iron door creaked open, revealing a dark, damp concrete stairway descending into the depths of the facility.
The air inside smelled of bleach, damp stone, and old medicine. They clicked on low-beam tactical flashlights, moving quickly through the narrow underground corridors.
Above them, the muted hum of industrial generators vibrated through the concrete walls.
“We’re directly beneath the medical wing,” Marcus whispered, checking a digital map on his wrist device. “The stairs at the end of this hallway lead straight into the restricted ward on the second floor.”
Adrian didn’t wait. The thought of Claire suffering alone in this sterile nightmare pushed away every ounce of fear or fatigue. He moved up the stairs, taking them two at a time.
At the top of the stairwell, a reinforced steel door with a small reinforced glass window separated them from the bright hallway of the medical ward.
Adrian peered through the glass.
The hallway was sterile and blindingly white. Two security guards stood outside a door at the end of the corridor. Nurses in unmarked white uniforms hurried back and forth carrying medical trays and heart monitors.
Through the quiet corridor, a faint, agonizing sound drifted toward the door.
A woman screaming in pain.
Adrian recognized that voice instantly. It was a sound that tore straight through his soul.
“Claire!” Adrian gasped, reaching for the door handle.
Marcus caught his arm, holding him back. “Wait! There are two guards right outside.”

“I don't care!” Adrian growled, his eyes wild with desperate love and rage.
Before Marcus could stop him, Adrian slammed his shoulder against the push-bar of the fire door, bursting into the medical corridor with a thunderous bang.
