Chapter 3 - The Shadow of St. Jude's

Adrian stood motionless in the center of the nursery, staring at the desperate carving on the wall. The carved letters—jagged, rushed, and filled with terrified devotion—bore witness to the nightmare Claire had endured while he was thousands of miles away playing the dutiful son.

Outside the door, the knob twisted violently once more.

“Adrian Whitmore, unlock this door right now!” Eleanor’s command was laced with an edge of control she was rapidly losing. “You are destroying private property! Have you lost your mind?”

Adrian carefully took out his smartphone and took clear, high-resolution photographs of the carved wall, capturing every single word, the fresh paint lines, and the blood-stained button resting on the window sill. Once the evidence was secured on his cloud drive, he walked toward the door, unlocked it, and pulled it wide open.

Eleanor stood in the hallway, flanked by two large, imposing men in dark suits. One of them had a faintly healing scar along his forearm—Thomas, the security chief whose button Adrian now carried in his pocket.

Eleanor caught sight of the damaged wall behind her son, her eyes widening in momentary shock before hardening into cold, calcified fury.

“What is the meaning of this vandalism?” she demanded, stepping into the room.

“You tell me,” Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, filled with a dark composure that mirrored his grandfather’s fierce demeanor. “You had her committed to St. Jude’s Sanatorium, didn’t you?”

Eleanor froze for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening. She quickly motioned with her hand, and the two security guards stepped into the room, effectively blocking the doorway.

“I have no idea what nonsense you are talking about,” Eleanor replied smoothly, recovering her composure. “You are hysterical, Adrian. You come home exhausted, listen to the idle gossip of fired servants, and start smashing the walls of your childhood home.”

“It’s written right there, Mother,” Adrian said, pointing to the scraped section of the wall. “Claire left me a message before your thugs dragged her out of here. She exposed what you’ve been doing—the offshore accounts, the falsified wills. You didn’t just hate her because she was from a humble background. You hated her because she was smart enough to figure out that you’ve been embezzling millions from Whitmore Maritime!”

Eleanor’s face went pale, but her eyes glittered with pure malice. The mask of the loving, aristocratic mother completely slipped away, revealing the ruthless corporate dictator who had ruled the family empire with an iron fist for decades.

“Claire was an intruder,” Eleanor said coldly, dropping all pretense of gentleness. “A gold-digging nobody who wormed her way into my son’s life to dismantle everything this family spent three generations building. She was poking her nose into matters that did not concern her. She threatened to ruin our family name!”

“She is my wife! And she is carrying your grandchild!” Adrian shouted, stepping close to his mother, his eyes blazing. “Where is she?”

“Where she belongs,” Eleanor hissed quiet and bitter. “Under professional care. St. Jude’s is a private, secure medical facility deep in the Blackwood mountains. It is run by close associates of our family. She is comfortable, Adrian. She is being taken care of until the baby is born.”

“And then what?” Adrian demanded, his voice shaking with righteous fury. “What was your grand plan, Eleanor? To steal my child and raise her while keeping my wife locked away or declared insane?”

“The child belongs to the Whitmore bloodline!” Eleanor barked, her voice echoing in the empty hallway. “She will be raised as a proper heir, with dignity, wealth, and status! Not raised by a schoolteacher’s daughter with radical ideas about corporate ethics! Once the child is born, Claire will sign over full custody and sign a non-disclosure agreement. In exchange, she will be given a generous settlement to disappear from our lives forever.”

“You are sick,” Adrian whispered, looking at his mother as if she were a total stranger. “You are truly insane.”

“I am protecting this family!” Eleanor barked. “And you will obey me, Adrian! Look around you—you have nothing without Whitmore Maritime. The board answers to me. The trust funds answer to me. The security staff answers to me. If you try to cross me, I will have you declared mentally unfit, just as I did with your wife. You will lose your position, your wealth, and you will never see that child.”

She gestured to Thomas and the other guard.

“Escort my son to his guest room,” Eleanor commanded coldly. “Confiscate his phone and car keys. He needs time to calm down and reflect on where his true loyalties lie.”

Thomas stepped forward, his massive hand reaching for Adrian’s shoulder. “Mr. Whitmore, please come with us quietly.”

Adrian didn’t hesitate.

Before Thomas could grab him, Adrian stepped into the guard’s space, drove a fierce elbow straight into Thomas’s solar plexus, and ducked under his wild swing. As the second guard lunged forward, Adrian grabbed the solid brass floor lamp he had used earlier and swung it with all his strength, catching the second guard across the chest and knocking him off balance.

Thomas gasped for air, reaching for a concealed holster beneath his jacket, but Adrian delivered a sharp kick to his knee, sending the heavy guard crashing to the wooden floor.

Eleanor gasped, taking two steps back in utter shock. She had never seen her son act with such calculated violence.

Adrian picked up his car keys from the dresser, grabbed his coat, and stood over the groaning security guard. He looked directly into his mother’s pale, stunned face.

“You built an empire on fear and lies, Eleanor,” Adrian said, his voice dangerously low. “But you made one fatal mistake. You thought I cared about your money more than I care about my family.”

“Adrian, stop!” Eleanor screamed as he stroled past her down the hallway. “If you leave this house, you are dead to me! You will have nothing!”

“I already have nothing if Claire isn't with me,” Adrian called back without turning around.

He rushed down the grand staircase, grabbed his suitcase from the entryway, and ran out the massive oak front doors into the cool, damp afternoon air.

He leaped into his SUV, slammed the engine into gear, and tore down the long, tree-lined driveway of the Whitmore estate, tires screeching against the gravel.

As he reached the main highway, he pulled out his second, private cell phone—a device Eleanor knew nothing about—and dialed a number he hadn't called in years.

The call connected on the third ring.

“Adrian?” a deep, gravelly voice answered. “I heard you were back from San Francisco. What’s going on?”

“Marcus,” Adrian said, his breath hitching as he pressed the gas pedal to the floor. “I need your help. My mother has taken Claire. They’re keeping her at St. Jude’s Sanatorium in Blackwood. I need legal backup, heavy security, and I need it right now.”

On the other end of the line, Marcus Vance—a former special forces operator turned high-profile corporate investigator and Adrian’s most trusted friend—was silent for two seconds.

“I’m picking up two of my best guys,” Marcus replied calmly, his tone shifting instantly into tactical efficiency. “St. Jude’s is a private fortress hidden in the mountains—it’s disguised as an elite psychiatric retreat, but it’s really a high-priced holding facility for the wealthy elite’s dirty secrets. You can’t just walk in through the front door, Adrian. They have armed guards and private protocols.”

“I don’t care if I have to tear that building down brick by brick,” Adrian said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel as the highway gave way to the winding, pine-lined roads leading up into the gloomy, fog-covered mountains. “My wife is in there, Marcus. And she’s eight months pregnant with my daughter.”

“Meet me at the diner three miles outside the Blackwood gates in forty minutes,” Marcus instructed. “We’re coming, brother. Hold tight.”

Adrian ended the call and drove into the gathering darkness, his eyes fixed on the winding road ahead, determination hardening his heart into steel.
