Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Office

Two days later, the fallout hit its peak. Miguel hadn't just lost his personal life; his professional world was rapidly imploding as well.

When David performed a deeper forensic audit of Miguel’s corporate expense accounts, we discovered something even more damning: Miguel hadn't just been using his own hidden savings for his second life with Elena; he had been falsifying travel expense reports, billing his employer for fictional client dinners, hotel stays in Dallas, and conference fees that never took place. He had essentially been embezzling corporate funds to finance his lifestyle.

Armed with this explosive evidence, Sarah and I decided to take it directly to Miguel’s corporate headquarters in downtown Phoenix.

We walked through the glass double doors of the executive suite, escorted by a senior partner from Sarah’s firm. The receptionist looked up nervously as we bypassed the waiting area and headed straight for the office of the Vice President of Operations, Marcus Vance—who, by a cruel twist of irony, was an old college acquaintance of Sarah’s.

Marcus stood up from his desk as we entered, his expression grave. “Sarah. Ana. I was told there was an urgent matter regarding one of our regional sales managers.”

Sarah laid the folder down on Marcus’s desk, opening it to reveal the audited expense reports cross-referenced with actual flight manifests, hotel registries, and the photographic evidence recovered from the mattress vault.

“Your star sales manager, Miguel Santos, has been systematically defrauding your company for over five years,” Sarah stated plainly. “He has billed the corporation upwards of ninety thousand dollars for trips he never took, using those funds to maintain a secondary residence and personal affairs.”

Marcus flipped through the pages, his face turning an angry shade of crimson. By the time he reached the end of the dossier, his jaw was clenched so tight his muscles twitched.

“That son of a bitch,” Marcus growled. He picked up his desk phone, punched a three-digit extension, and barked into the receiver. “Security. Send Miguel Santos to my office immediately. And have the corporate compliance team join us.”

Ten minutes later, the door swung open, and Miguel walked in, looking disheveled, exhausted, and desperate. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he saw me sitting across the desk from his boss, flanked by attorneys and corporate executives.

“Marcus… what is this?” Miguel stammered, his voice cracking.

Marcus slammed the folder down onto the desk, the heavy thud echoing off the walls. “This is the end of your career, Miguel. Falsifying corporate expenses, embezzlement, and gross misconduct. You’re terminated with cause, effective immediately. And our legal team is currently preparing a criminal referral for fraud.”

Miguel spun around to look at me, total despair etched into every line of his face. He fell to his knees right there in the middle of the executive office, clasping his hands together.

“Ana… please… please don't do this to me,” he begged, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I lost my job, my accounts are frozen, Elena won't speak to me… if you destroy me completely, I’ll have nothing left!”

I looked down at the man who had lied to me, manipulated me, and treated our marriage like a disposable convenience for years. I felt no anger left. Only a profound sense of closure.

“You didn't care about what you left me with, Miguel,” I said softly, standing up from my chair. “You made your bed. Now you get to lie in it.”

I turned, walked out of the office, and left him kneeling in the wreckage of his own making.
