Chapter 5 - Colliding Worlds

The shattered ceramic mug lay in a scatter of porcelain shards and dark brown liquid at Miguel’s feet, but neither of us looked down. Our eyes remained locked in a tense, suffocating standoff across the threshold of unit 704.
Elena looked back and forth between us, her hand flying up to cover her open mouth. "Miguel..." she whispered, her voice trembling with confusion and sudden, dawning horror. "Who... who is this?"
Miguel didn't answer her. He looked at me as if he were staring at a ghost rising from the grave. His lips parted, but no words came out. The polished, confident corporate sales manager was gone, replaced by a cornered animal caught in the harsh glare of reality.
“Ana…” Miguel finally choked out, taking a halting step forward, his hands raised defensively. “Ana, let me explain. It’s not what you think…”
“Shut up, Miguel,” I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a razor-sharp chill that cut right through the air of the luxury apartment.
I stepped past a stunned Elena, pushing my way into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. The apartment smelled of high-end vanilla and fresh espresso—a sharp contrast to the rotting stench I had uncovered in our mattress back home. Everywhere I looked, there were markers of a shared life. Framed pictures of Miguel and Elena on the mantelpiece, his designer jackets hanging in the hallway closet, his toothbrush resting in a glass beside hers in the master bathroom.
Elena backed away slowly, her eyes wide with disbelief as she looked at Miguel. “You told me you were divorced,” she said, her voice shaking violently. “You told me your wife died in an accident years ago… that you were completely alone.”
Miguel flinched, turning desperately toward her. “Elena, wait, honey, listen to me—it’s complicated—she wouldn't give me a divorce, she was unstable—l-let me talk to you—”
“Don’t you dare lie to her, Miguel,” I interrupted, pulling my phone from my pocket and unlocking the screen. I tapped on the folder containing the scanned receipts, the bank statements, and the photographs I had extracted from our mattress vault. “You can save your breath. I know about the financial drain, I know about the fake business trips, and I certainly know about the lies you’ve been feeding both of us.”
I turned my phone screen toward Elena, showing her the timeline of our marriage overlapping perfectly with her relationship with Miguel. The color vanished entirely from Elena’s face. She staggered backward, leaning against the kitchen counter for support.
“You lied to both of us,” Elena whispered, tears of humiliation welling up in her green eyes. She looked at Miguel with sheer disgust. “You used me. You built a lie on top of another lie.”
Miguel looked trapped between us, his face slick with nervous sweat. He tried to reach out to Elena, but she recoiled as if he were toxic.

“Get out,” Elena hissed, pointing a trembling finger toward the front door. “Both of you, get out of my apartment right now, or I swear to God I’m calling the police.”
I gave Elena one final, lingering look—not of anger, but of shared pity. We were both victims of the same master manipulator. Without another word, I turned on my heel and walked out of the apartment, leaving Miguel standing alone in the wreckage of his shattered double life.
