Chapter 7 - The Legal Siege

Sarah’s office on the twelfth floor of a downtown Phoenix high-rise offered a sweeping view of the city skyline. Across the polished mahogany conference table sat Sarah herself, alongside a forensic accountant named David whom she had hurriedly brought in to assist with the financial dissection.
I slid the leather portfolio across the table. David opened it, his eyes widening as he sifted through the receipts, bank statements, and digital printouts of hidden transactions.
“Good grief,” David muttered, adjusting his glasses. “This is a masterclass in asset concealment. He’s been funneled corporate bonuses and personal savings into offshore accounts and secondary digital wallets for at least five years. Total hidden capital looks to be well upwards of three hundred thousand dollars.”
Sarah leaned back in her leather chair, a fierce, predatory smile playing on her lips. “Well, Mr. Miguel thought he was being clever, but under Arizona law, any assets acquired or concealed during the marriage are subject to equitable distribution. Furthermore, intentional dissipation of marital assets for extra-marital affairs opens him up to severe financial penalties.”
“Can we freeze his accounts today?” I asked, leaning forward.
“Not just freeze them,” Sarah said, picking up her landline phone. “We’re slapping emergency injunctions on his personal accounts, his corporate expense cards, and any property tied to his name. By the time he logs into his mobile banking app this afternoon, he won’t even be able to buy a cup of coffee.”
Over the next two hours, Sarah drafted the emergency divorce petition, temporary restraining orders, and asset freeze requests with breathtaking speed. Every document was stamped, filed electronically with the Maricopa County Superior Court, and dispatched to process servers tasked with tracking Miguel down at his workplace.
As the afternoon sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting a golden hue across the desert city, my phone finally buzzed violently on the table.
It was an unknown number, but I already knew who it was.
I pressed accept and put it on speakerphone, letting Sarah and David listen in.
“Ana!” Miguel’s voice erupted through the receiver, frantic, furious, and utterly unhinged. “What the hell did you do?! My corporate cards are locked! My personal accounts are frozen! HR just called me saying court marshals are serving papers at my office! Have you lost your mind?!”
I kept my voice calm, steady, and devoid of emotion.
“No, Miguel,” I replied quietly. “I’ve simply found my mind. You built your life on lies, and now you get to deal with the reality of the fallout.”
“Ana, please—we can talk about this! Let’s sit down like adults—”
“Talk to my lawyer,” I interrupted. “And don't ever step foot in my house again. The locks have already been changed.”

With that, I tapped the red button, ending the call. The silence in the conference room was profound. Sarah looked at me with deep respect, nodding slowly.
“Well handled, Ana,” Sarah said softly. “Now, let’s prepare for the storm.”
