Part 3 – The Search Warrant

The purchase records arrived two days later.
The tracker had been ordered online six weeks earlier.
Paid for using...
Frank's credit card.
Delivered to...
Janet and Frank's home.
The warrant was approved that afternoon.
Detective Collins asked whether I wanted to be present during the search.
I almost said no.
Then I thought about Mia.
"Yes."
Three police vehicles quietly pulled into my former in-laws' neighborhood.
Janet answered the door wearing an expensive sweater and an irritated smile.
"What is the meaning of this?"
Detective Collins held up the warrant.
"We're conducting a search."
Frank immediately protested.
"This is ridiculous."
Adam arrived twenty minutes later.
The confidence on his face disappeared the second he saw the officers carrying evidence boxes into the living room.
Computers.
Phones.
Receipts.
Shipping records.
One officer called from upstairs.
"Detective!"
Inside Frank's home office sat an entire drawer filled with identical tracking devices.
Some unopened.
Some already programmed.
Beside them was a notebook.
It contained dates.
Addresses.
Serial numbers.
And one handwritten line.
Mia – Birthday Bear
Detective Collins slowly closed the notebook.
No one spoke.
Adam finally whispered,
"...Dad?"

Frank stared at the floor.
For the first time in years, he had no explanation.
