Part 2 – The Silent Investigation

I didn't sleep that night.
The teddy bear sat sealed inside a large evidence bag on my kitchen table, looking as innocent as any toy in a department store.
At eight the next morning, after dropping Mia at school, I drove straight to the local police station.
The officer behind the desk looked surprised when I carefully placed the bag in front of him.
"I think someone hid a tracking device inside my six-year-old daughter's birthday present."
Within minutes, I was sitting with Detective Rachel Collins.
She never interrupted me.
She examined every photo I'd taken, then slipped on gloves before opening the evidence bag.
Using a small screwdriver, she carefully removed the plastic casing hidden inside the bear.
"It isn't just a GPS tracker," she said quietly.
"What do you mean?"
She turned the tiny device over.
"It also contains a microphone."
I felt every bit of color leave my face.
"A microphone?"
She nodded.
"If it's active, someone could potentially hear conversations whenever the toy is nearby."
The room suddenly felt too small.
Mia had hugged that bear.
She had carried it around the house.
She had almost taken it to bed.
Detective Collins looked at me carefully.
"Did your daughter ever spend time alone with this toy?"
"No."
"That's good."
She placed the device into an evidence container.
"We'll have our digital forensics unit examine it. Don't contact your former husband or his parents."
"I wasn't planning to."
"Good."
She looked directly into my eyes.
"If someone installed this intentionally, warning them only gives them time to destroy evidence."
That afternoon I received another surprise.
Adam called.
"Did Mia like the bear?"
His voice sounded almost rehearsed.
"It was... interesting."
"I'm sure Mom spent forever picking it out."
I waited.
Silence has a way of making guilty people nervous.
Finally he asked,
"She's keeping it close, right?"
There it was.
The question.
Not "Did she like it?"
Not "Is she happy?"
Just whether the bear stayed near her.
I answered calmly.
"It isn't with her anymore."
There was a pause.
Long enough to tell me everything.
"Oh."
Then he quickly changed the subject.
"Well... kids lose interest."
When the call ended, I wrote down every word while it was still fresh.
Three days later Detective Collins called.
"We've finished the preliminary analysis."
I drove to the station immediately.
The forensic technician pointed at several photographs displayed on a monitor.
"The tracker transmitted its location every sixty seconds."
Another image appeared.
"And the microphone activated whenever sound levels exceeded a certain threshold."
I swallowed hard.
"So someone could know exactly where Mia was... and listen."
"Yes."
Then came the most important discovery.
The technician zoomed in on a tiny circuit board.
"This device wasn't homemade."
"It had to be programmed."
"Can you tell by whom?"
May you like
"Not yet."
"But we can identify who purchased it."
