Chapter 8 - The Vow

One year after the fateful night in Suite 404, the Cassano estate hosted a celebration the likes of which Chicago had never seen. The high iron gates were draped in white roses and satin ribbons.

The estate grounds were filled with music, laughter, and guests. But this was not a gathering of mobsters or violent men—Alessandro had systematically dismantled his illegal operations over the past twelve months, transitioning the Cassano empire into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and medical logistics. He had honored his promise to Lauren to leave the shadows behind.

In the rose garden overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan, a simple white altar stood under the summer sun.

Lauren stood before the mirror in her dressing room, wearing an exquisite, simple lace gown that cascaded softly to the floor. Isabella stood behind her, adjusting her veil, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes.

"You look breathtaking, sister," Isabella said, kissing Lauren's cheek. "My brother hasn't stopped smiling in six months. You transformed him. You saved all of us."

"We saved each other," Lauren said gently, looking at her reflection. She wasn't the broke, exhausted night nurse eating crackers in the breakroom anymore. She was a confident woman, loved, valued, and standing on the threshold of a bright future.

Outside, the harp began to play.

Lauren walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Vane, who had become a father figure to her over the past year. At the end of the runner stood Alessandro, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. Beside him stood Marco, holding one-year-old Matteo, who was wearing a tiny matching tuxedo and giggling happily.

When Alessandro looked at Lauren, his eyes filled with tears he made no effort to hide.

They exchanged vows under the open summer sky—vows not of power or wealth, but of fierce devotion, endless protection, and unwavering love.

"I used to believe the world was made of darkness and duty," Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion as he placed a band of diamonds on her finger. "Then you walked into a room full of guns and saved my heart. I promise to spend the rest of my life protecting yours."

"I took an oath to preserve life," Lauren replied, tears shining on her cheeks. "But loving you taught me how to live it. You are my home, Alessandro."

When the minister pronounced them husband and wife, Alessandro pulled Lauren into his arms and kissed her to the thunderous applause of their family and friends.
