Chapter 2 - The Midnight Protocol

"Who are you?" Dr. Hale’s voice was laced with frantic arrogance, his hand hovering over the syringe of epinephrine.

"I said don't give him that!" Lauren’s voice cut through the blaring heart monitor’s flatline. She dropped the stack of sterile towels onto the supply cart and stepped directly past the hulking, armed guard who reached out to grab her shoulder.

"Step back, girl," the guard growled, but before his hand could lock onto her arm, Alessandro Cassano’s pitch-black eyes snapped toward her.

"Hold," Alessandro commanded. The guard froze instantly. Alessandro kept the cold steel of his barrel pressed against Hale’s trembling temple, but his gaze drifted to Lauren—a pale, night-shift nurse in faded blue scrubs, her hair pinned up haphazardly, her eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute clarity. "Speak," the mob boss said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "And give me a reason not to let this room burn."

Lauren took a slow, deliberate breath. The air in the room was suffocating, thick with the smell of scorched adrenaline, ozone, and fear. She didn't look at Alessandro’s gun. She looked at the tiny, purple-laced abdomen of baby Matteo inside the acrylic incubator.

"Epinephrine will burst his coronary arteries," Lauren said, her tone steady, devoid of the panic that had paralyzed the fifteen high-priced specialists around her. "You’re treating this like standard pediatric cardiac arrest. It isn't. Look at his skin—that isn't cyanosis from lack of oxygen. That’s a acute toxic systemic vascular collapse caused by bisphenol-leaching in the specialized ECMO tubing your team brought in from Boston."

Dr. Hale gasped, his face turning ashen. "That's preposterous! This equipment is medical-grade, state-of-the-art—"

"It’s outdated stock from the 2018 recall batch!" Lauren snapped, taking two strides toward the incubator. She pointed at the faint, sweet chemical odor wafting from the heated ventilator lines. "He’s having an anaphylactoid plasticizer shock. The high-dose epinephrine you’ve been pushing for twenty minutes is constricting his micro-vessels, trapping the toxin in his liver and heart. You’re poisoning him faster than his body can flush it!"

The room went deathly silent. The fifteen specialists looked at one another, their Ivy League diplomas suddenly feeling completely useless.

Alessandro shifted his gaze from Hale to Lauren. He saw no greed in her eyes, no fear of his reputation—only the desperate, fierce protectiveness of a healer.

"Can you fix him?" Alessandro asked softly.

"I need a manual bag-valve mask, a cold saline flush with sodium bicarbonate, and I need every single one of these specialized machines disconnected right now," Lauren said, meeting his eyes without flinching. "And I need these fifteen men to get out of my way."

Alessandro didn't hesitate. He lowered his gun, grabbed Dr. Hale by the collar, and threw him toward the double doors. "Get out. All of you. Except her."

The room cleared in five seconds flat. Guards forced the disgracefully quiet specialists into the hallway. Only Lauren, Alessandro, and his unconscious sister Isabella remained in Suite 404.

Lauren sprinted into action. She tore off the bio-incompatible tubing with her bare hands, hooked up a simple, manual hand-pump, and began bagging the infant herself. One, two, squeeze. One, two, squeeze. She grabbed an ampule of bicarbonate, calculated the micro-dosage in her head, and pushed it into the remaining IV line.

"Come on, little guy," she whispered, her own heart hammering against her ribs. "Come back. Fight."

Alessandro stood behind her, a giant of a man accustomed to tearing down empires, rendered entirely powerless by a three-pound baby. He watched Lauren’s hands—rough from cheap soap, steady as bedrock.

For two agonized minutes, the flatline tone continued to scream.

Then, the monitor flickered.

Beep.

A pause.

Beep... Beep.

The purple lace on Matteo’s tiny chest began to fade back to a soft, delicate pink. A tiny, raspy cry broke from the infant’s lips—the sweetest sound ever heard inside Suite 404.

Lauren sank against the edge of the incubator, tears pricking her eyes as she kept rhythmically pumping the air bag. Alessandro stepped forward, his trembling hand hovering over his nephew’s chest before he turned his dark gaze back to the twenty-five-year-old night nurse.

"What is your name?" he asked softly.

May you like

"Lauren," she breathed, wiping her forehead with her sleeve. "Lauren Hayes."

"Lauren Hayes," Alessandro repeated, as if etching it into stone. "You just earned a debt the Cassano family can never fully repay."
