Chapter 4 - The Cassano Estate

Two days later, a sleek black armored sedan escorted Lauren from her humble apartment to the suburban hills of Lake Forest, where the Cassano estate sat behind soaring iron gates and towering oak trees.

The estate was a magnificent limestone mansion overlooking Lake Michigan, surrounded by manicured gardens and high-tech security watchtowers. For Lauren, who had spent the last three years living in a cramped studio apartment with a leaking radiator, stepping into the grand foyer felt like entering another century.

Isabella Cassano was resting in a sunlit master suite on the second floor. She was a beautiful woman with dark, expressive eyes that mirrored her brother's, though hers carried a gentle warmth. When Lauren entered the room carrying Matteo for his scheduled feeding, Isabella burst into tears.

"Lauren," Isabella sobbed, reaching out to grasp the nurse's hands tightly. "Alessandro told me everything. You saved my boy. You stood up to those terrifying men and saved my little Matteo."

"He’s a fighter, Miss Cassano," Lauren said gently, placing the healthy, cooing baby into his mother’s arms. "He did most of the work."

"Call me Isabella, please," the mother insisted, kissing her baby's forehead. "You aren't staff here, Lauren. You are our guardian angel."

Over the next two weeks, Lauren settled into a routine that felt surreal. She had her own private suite in the East Wing, complete with a balcony overlooking the lake. She checked Matteo’s vitals, managed his feeding schedules, and monitored his lung recovery. Without the toxic plasticizers, the child thrived, gaining weight rapidly and filling the quiet halls of the mansion with lively coos.

Yet, despite the luxury, the tension in the estate was palpable.

Alessandro was rarely seen during the day. He worked out of a heavily guarded study on the ground floor, managing his vast business empire while waging a silent, devastating economic war against the Moretti syndicate. But every evening, without fail, at precisely 8:00 PM, Alessandro would knock on the nursery door.

He would shed his gun holster at the door, sanitize his hands, and sit in the rocking chair, holding tiny Matteo against his broad chest.

Lauren would sit across from him, reviewing medical charts, and found herself studying the man behind the terrifying reputation. Underneath the cold, ruthless exterior was a man weighed down by immense responsibility, fiercely devoted to protecting the few people he loved.

"You look tired, Mr. Cassano," Lauren said softly one evening as the autumn wind howled against the windowpanes.

"Alessandro," he corrected her softly, not looking up from his nephew, who was fast asleep against his shoulder. "And tired is a luxury I can't afford right now. Don Moretti is getting desperate. His supply lines in the harbor are collapsing, and he knows I know who tampered with the hospital equipment."

"Is it dangerous? For you?" Lauren asked, surprising herself with the genuine concern in her voice.

May you like

Alessandro looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Always. But no harm will ever cross this gate to reach you or Matteo. I give you my word."

Lauren felt a strange warmth spread through her chest. In a world full of men who broke promises, Alessandro Cassano’s word felt like an unbreakable shield.
