Chapter 9 - A New Chapter

The new house smelled of fresh paint and pine needles. It was small, cozy, and entirely ours—a sanctuary built on honesty rather than inherited expectations.
We spent the weekend unpacking boxes, hanging pictures, and building furniture. For the first time in over a year, laughter echoed freely through our living room without the looming shadow of Patricia’s judgment hanging over us.
Daniel became the father he had always wanted to be. He spent hours teaching Emma how to walk in the backyard, holding her tiny hands as she stomped through the autumn leaves. Every evening, he cooked dinner and insisted on doing the dishes, making sure I had time to rest and pursue my own photography career, which I had put on hold during the chaotic months past.
One evening, after putting Emma to sleep in her new room, Daniel found me sitting on the back patio, watching the stars.
He wrapped a warm blanket around my shoulders and sat down beside me, pulling me close. I leaned my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
"I never asked you," Daniel murmured softly, resting his chin on my head. "What made you so strong that day? At the party, when everyone was staring at you... you didn't break."

I smiled quietly, looking up at the clear night sky. "I knew the truth, Daniel. Lies are loud and aggressive because they have to be. Truth is quiet. It just waits."
Daniel kissed the top of my head gently. "I'm glad I finally learned how to listen to it."
