Chapter 5 - The Fractured Home

The revelation sent shockwaves through our lives that no one was prepared for. Patricia stayed on her knees, sobbing and reaching for Daniel’s pant leg, but he stepped back from her as if she were a total stranger.

"Don't touch me," Daniel whispered. His voice was hollow, stripped of all emotion. "You spent my entire life telling me how to live, who to love, how to act... and you aren't even my mother."

"Daniel, please!" Patricia wept, her polished facade completely destroyed. "I fed you! I clothed you! I gave you everything! It doesn't matter whose blood you have!"

"It mattered to you!" Daniel roared, turning on her with a rage I had never seen in him before. "It mattered enough for you to publicly humiliate my wife! To accuse her of being unfaithful in front of our entire family! You tried to destroy my marriage to protect your sick, twisted lie!"

He turned toward the door, pointing a shaking finger outside. "Get out of my house."

"Daniel—"

"GET OUT!"

Patricia scrambled to her feet, clutching her designer handbag like a shield, and fled through the front door. The slam of the door echoed through the empty hallway.

Then, there was only silence.

Daniel turned to look at me. The doubt that had clouded his eyes for days was gone, replaced by profound shame and utter devastation. He took a hesitant step toward me.

"Claire..." he choked out. "Oh God, Claire... I'm so sorry. I was such a fool. I should have trusted you. I should have defended you."

I looked at him, feeling a deep, painful ache in my chest. But when I reached down into my heart for the warmth I used to feel for him, I found only cold ash.

"You should have," I agreed softly. "When your mother called me a liar in front of everyone, you didn't look at her with disgust. You looked at me with suspicion. You had already bought a test behind my back, Daniel. You didn't believe in me."

"I was confused! She was poisoning my head for months!" he pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "Please, Claire, we can fix this. We can get a proper paternity test done with a legal comparison between you, me, and Emma now that we know my maternal line is different! We can prove Emma is mine!"

"I don't need a test to know Emma is mine," I said quietly. "And I don't need a test to know that my husband abandons me when things get tough."

I walked upstairs, packed two large suitcases for myself and Emma, and brought her down in her car seat. Daniel stood in the hallway, weeping, begging me not to leave.

"I need time, Daniel," I said as I opened the front door. "And right now, you have bigger things to deal with than saving this marriage."
