Chapter 4 - The Lie Unravels

Daniel gasped, sinking into the sofa as if shot. "No... no, no, no. Claire... how could you?"

Patricia erupted into a shrill laugh of victory. "I knew it! I knew it from the day that child was born! You lying, unfaithful snake! Daniel, call a lawyer immediately! Get her out of this house!"

I didn't panic. I didn't cry. My heart was pounding, but my father's warning echoed in my mind. I turned to page two of the official lab report—the expanded genetic marker analysis.

"Read the rest, Daniel," I said softly, handing him the second page.

Daniel's hands were shaking so violently he almost dropped the paper. "What... what is this?"

"Read it out loud," I commanded.

Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes scanning the technical breakdown. "Genetic marker comparison between Subject A (Emma) and Subject B (Daniel)... zero shared paternal alleles. However... genetic marker comparison between Subject B (Daniel) and maternal reference line..."

He stopped. His face turned completely gray.

"Read it, Daniel," I insisted.

"Subject B (Daniel) does not possess the maternal lineage markers of Patricia Vance," Daniel read, his voice cracking into a broken whisper. "Subject B is not the biological son of Patricia Vance."

The living room fell into a silence so profound you could hear the tick of the wall clock.

Patricia’s triumphant smile instantly evaporated. Her face drained of all color, replacing her arrogance with pure, unadulterated terror. "What... what nonsense is that? Give me that paper!"

She snatched the document from Daniel's hands, her eyes frantically tracing the lab's official conclusion.

Daniel was not Emma's biological father—not because I had cheated, but because Daniel was not who he thought he was. And because Daniel shared no biological relation to Patricia, his genetic profile did not match Emma's at all through his expected family tree.

I pulled out a second document from my purse—the old medical file my father had sent me two nights ago.

"Thirty years ago, Patricia," I said, stepping closer to her, "you gave birth to a stillborn baby boy at St. Jude’s Hospital. But you were terrified your wealthy husband would leave you if you didn't produce an heir. So you paid off a nurse and illegally took an abandoned baby boy from the nursery. You raised Daniel as your own, keeping the secret buried for three decades."

Daniel stood up, towering over his mother, trembling. "Mom... what is she talking about? What is this?"

Patricia dropped the papers. She fell to her knees on the rug, wrapping her hands around her face, sobbing hysterically.

"I had to, Daniel!" she wailed, her voice cracking with desperation. "Your father was going to leave me! I loved you! I raised you! You are my son!"

"You stole him," I said quietly. "And when my baby was born with my father's blue eyes—a recessive gene passed down through my side of the family—you panicked. You knew that if Daniel's blood was ever closely examined, your lie would crumble. So you tried to frame me for infidelity first, hoping to drive me away before anyone looked too closely at Daniel's DNA."
