Chapter 9 - The Garden Wedding

The first Saturday of May brought perfect weather to New York. The sky was a clear, brilliant blue, and the air was warm with the scent of spring flowers. The gardens of the Ashford estate had been transformed into a breathtaking sanctuary, decorated with white roses, delicate cherry blossoms, and simple wooden pews set upon the lush green lawn.
Unlike the lavish, corporate spectacle that Victoria Vance had once planned, this wedding was intimate, authentic, and filled with deep emotional resonance. Among the guests were the household staff—Mrs. Reynolds, Marcus, the groundskeepers, and the kitchen crew—seated in the front rows alongside medical staff from St. Jude’s Hospital and families served by the new foundation.
Inside the mansion, Emma stood before a full-length mirror in her dressing room. She wore an elegant, simple gown of ivory silk with delicate lace sleeves, holding a bouquet of white freesia—Clara’s favorite flowers, chosen deliberately as a loving tribute to the past.
A soft knock came at the door, and Ethan stepped in, dressed in a sharp navy-blue tuxedo that matched his father's. He held a small velvet ring pillow in his hands.
"You look like a princess, Emma," Ethan said, his blue eyes shining with admiration.
Emma knelt, taking care not to wrinkle her dress, and smoothed his bow tie. "And you look like the handsome prince who saved me, Ethan. Are you ready for your big job today as ring bearer?"
Ethan nodded proudly. "I kept the rings safe. Daddy is waiting down in the garden. He looks really nervous!"
Emma laughed softly, kissing his cheek. "Let's go make sure he knows everything is going to be wonderful."
Down in the garden, classical string quartet music drifted through the air. Daniel stood at the wooden altar beneath a canopy of white blossoms, adjusting his cuffs nervously. When the music shifted to the traditional bridal processional, the guests stood up.
Ethan walked down the aisle first, stepping with great care and holding the ring pillow high. The guests smiled warmly at the confident, happy child.
Then came Emma, walking down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Harrison, the kindly chief physician from St. Jude’s who had supported her during Clara’s illness and had become a father figure to her.
When Daniel saw Emma, his eyes welled with tears. All the grief, legal battles, public chaos, and corporate struggles melted away into nothingness. Standing before him was the woman who had walked into his cold, silent house and filled it with light and love.
Dr. Harrison placed Emma’s hand in Daniel’s. "Take good care of her, Daniel," the old doctor whispered.
"With my life," Daniel replied softly.
The ceremony was officiated by an old family friend. The vows were not pre-written corporate promises, but sincere declarations from the heart.
When it came time for Daniel to speak his vows, he looked deeply into Emma’s eyes. "Emma, when I lost Clara, I thought my life was over, reduced to merely surviving and protecting Ethan from behind high walls. You came into our home not with grand declarations, but with gentle patience. You taught my son how to speak again, and you taught me how to feel again. I promise to love you, honor you, respect you, and stand by your side through every storm and every joy."
Then Emma spoke her vows, her voice clear and unwavering. "Daniel, I came into your home keeping a sacred promise to a dying mother. I never expected to find a love that would heal my own heart. You have given me a home, a purpose, and a family. I promise to stand by you, to cherish Ethan, to build a life of laughter and compassion with you, and to love you unconditionally for all the days of my life."
"Do you have the rings?" the officiant asked.
Ethan stepped forward proudly, offering the velvet pillow. Daniel and Emma exchanged the rings—symbols of a love forged through grief, trial, and unyielding devotion.
May you like
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared warmly. "You may kiss the bride."
Daniel pulled Emma close, his hands framing her face, and kissed her deeply as the guests burst into resounding applause and cheers. Rose petals rained down upon them as they turned to face their friends and family, holding hands tightly, with Ethan beaming between them.
