Chapter 6 - Whispers of Treason

Upon their return to the city, the newfound warmth in the Ashford household was put to a severe test. While the Vance family had been neutralized, a new, internal threat emerged from within Ashford Global Holdings.
Arthur Pendelton, the senior vice-president of the corporation and a long-time friend of Daniel’s late father, had grown deeply uncomfortable with Daniel’s recent priorities. Arthur was a traditionalist who believed that a corporate leader should be unyielding, unemotional, and focused entirely on profit margins. He viewed Daniel’s recent public battles, his devotion to his son, and his growing relationship with a former maid as signs of dangerous vulnerability.
Arthur began quietly conspiring with a consortium of international investors who sought to stage a boardroom coup. Their plan was simple: demonstrate that Daniel was mentally unsuited to lead a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, force a vote of no confidence, and strip him of his position as Chief Executive Officer.
One morning, Daniel arrived at the corporate headquarters to find an emergency board meeting had been convened without his knowledge.
Entering the glass-walled boardroom on the top floor of the Manhattan skyscraper, Daniel found Arthur Pendelton sitting at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by twelve board members and legal representatives.
"What is the meaning of this, Arthur?" Daniel asked, his voice cold and commanding as he walked to the foot of the table.
Arthur adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles and slid a thick dossier across the table. "Daniel, we are taking action to protect the future of Ashford Global. Over the past six months, your personal life has created unprecedented volatility in our stock prices. You canceled a merger that would have secured our European division, you publicly engaged in legal wars with former partners, and you have elevated a domestic staff member into a position of prominent influence over your personal affairs."
"My personal affairs do not concern this board," Daniel countered sharply. "Our third-quarter profits are up by twelve percent, and the European division has been successfully restructured without the Vance acquisition."
"It is a matter of leadership and stability," Arthur insisted, standing up. "We have received a formal petition signed by forty percent of the voting shareholders requesting a vote of no confidence. We are asking you to step down voluntarily as CEO and transition to a non-executive chairman role. If you refuse, we will bring this to a vote on Friday, and we have the proxy votes to remove you."
Daniel realized the depth of the betrayal. Arthur had been gathering support in secret for months, exploiting Daniel’s period of personal tragedy to undermine his authority.
When Daniel returned to the estate that evening, his face was pale, his jaw set in a hard line. He did not want to worry Emma or Ethan, but Emma knew him too well. She met him in the hallway, took his briefcase, and gently guided him into the study.
"Tell me what happened," she said softly, pouring him a glass of water.
Daniel explained the situation in the boardroom—the petition, the impending vote of no confidence, and Arthur Pendelton’s corporate coup. "If I lose control of the company, my grandfather's legacy is gone. But more than that, Arthur will dismantle our family's philanthropic foundation—the very foundation that funds the pediatric oncology wing where Clara was treated."
Emma’s eyes flashed with determination. "They are using your love for your family as a weapon against you, making it seem like a weakness."
"That's how the corporate world sees it," Daniel said, leaning back against his desk with a heavy sigh. "They see empathy as a liability."
"Then we show them it is your greatest strength," Emma said firmly.
Over the next forty-eight hours, Emma became Daniel’s silent strategist. Utilizing her meticulous organizational skills learned through years of critical care nursing, she helped Daniel review thousands of pages of shareholder records, financial reports, and proxy voting files.
Late on Wednesday night, while searching through public filings of Arthur Pendelton’s offshore holdings, Emma noticed a suspicious pattern. A shell company registered in the Cayman Islands had recently purchased a massive block of Ashford Global stock at a steep discount—just days before Arthur initiated the vote of no confidence.
"Daniel, look at this," Emma said, pointing to the screen. "This shell company, Meridian Enterprises, bought eight percent of the voting stock two weeks ago. The principal officer listed for Meridian is a legal firm in Geneva... the exact same legal firm that handles Arthur Pendelton’s private estate."
Daniel leaned in, analyzing the transaction dates. "He's shorting the stock. He engineered the public panic around my personal life to artificially lower the stock price, purchased the shares through a shadow company, and now he's using those shares to vote me out. It's illegal insider trading and market manipulation."
With this evidence in hand, Daniel did not call the police immediately. Instead, he waited for Friday morning.
The boardroom was packed with shareholders, board members, and news journalists when Daniel walked in. Arthur Pendelton smiled triumphantly from the head of the table.
"The time for the vote has arrived, Daniel," Arthur declared smoothly. "Do you wish to make a final statement before we cast the ballots?"
Daniel walked slowly to the front of the room, plugging a USB drive into the podium's digital projector. "Just a short one, Arthur."
The massive screens in the boardroom lit up, displaying detailed banking records, transaction logs, and wire transfers linking Meridian Enterprises directly to Arthur Pendelton's private offshore accounts.
The room erupted into gasps. Board members leaned forward in shock, while Arthur’s face drained of all color.
"Arthur Pendelton has orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to manipulate our stock, sabotage our European expansion, and steal control of this company for personal enrichment," Daniel declared, his voice echoing through the silent room. "Federal investigators and the Securities and Exchange Commission have already been provided with these documents. As of ten minutes ago, federal agents are waiting in the lobby."
Within minutes, federal marshals entered the boardroom and escorted a silent, humiliated Arthur Pendelton out in handcuffs.
The remaining board members stood up, applauding Daniel’s brilliance and swift action. The vote of no confidence was unanimously scrapped, and Daniel's position as CEO was secured permanently.
When Daniel stepped out of the skyscraper into the crisp afternoon air, Emma was waiting for him in the backseat of the company car. As he slid into the seat beside her, he let out a long breath and took her hand.

"We did it," Daniel said, looking at her with overwhelming gratitude. "You saved me again, Emma."
"We saved each other," she replied softly, leaning her head against his shoulder as the car pulled away into the city traffic.
