Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Thread

The public sympathy generated by the magazine article brought a temporary reprieve to the Ashford estate, but behind closed doors, a darker strategy was unfolding. Harrison Vance hired a private intelligence firm to dig deeply into Emma’s background, hunting for any flaw, past mistake, or hidden secret that could be weaponized in court.

Within days, legal notices were served at the Ashford estate. Harrison Vance’s legal team filed a formal complaint with the State Medical Board, accusing Emma of unethical conduct, breach of patient confidentiality, and practicing domestic care under false pretenses. Concurrently, a civil lawsuit was brought against Daniel for breach of contract regarding the canceled business mergers tied to the marriage agreement.

One evening, as rain lashed against the tall windows of the Ashford library, Daniel received a thick folder from his head of security, Marcus.

"Boss, Vance's investigators have been digging into Emma's past before she worked at St. Jude's," Marcus reported, standing by the desk. "They found something she didn't disclose on her background checks."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "What is it?"

"Eight years ago, Emma was involved in a major malpractice lawsuit at a municipal hospital in Chicago," Marcus explained. "A patient suffered a fatal drug interaction while under her care. She was cleared of criminal negligence, but her nursing license was temporarily suspended for six months during the inquiry before being fully reinstated."

Daniel stared at the documents. The headlines from old Chicago papers were sensational: Nurse Implicated in Fatal Medication Error.

Determined to hear the truth directly from her, Daniel walked to the East Wing and knocked on Emma’s door. When she opened it, she saw the file in his hand and immediately recognized the cover. Her face paled, and her shoulders visibly slumped.

"You found out," she said softly, stepping back to let him into her small living room.

"I need you to tell me what happened in Chicago, Emma," Daniel said, his voice flat, though not unkind. "Vance’s lawyers are going to leak this to the press tomorrow morning. I cannot defend you if I don't know the whole truth."

Emma sat on the edge of an armchair, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed her skirt. "Eight years ago, I was a young nurse working sixty-hour shifts at a underfunded public hospital. A senior attending physician made a critical dosage error on a patient's chart. When the patient went into cardiac arrest, the physician altered the electronic medical record to shift the blame onto me. I was the floor nurse."

"Why didn't you fight back?" Daniel asked.

"I did," Emma replied, her voice filled with ancient pain. "I fought for six months. I spent every penny of my savings on legal fees. Eventually, internal hospital emails were uncovered that proved the doctor had altered the charts. My license was fully restored, and the hospital issued a private settlement. But the emotional toll was devastating. I left Chicago, moved here, and decided to dedicate my life to private palliative care, where I could give individual attention to one patient at a time without hospital politics."

She looked up at Daniel, tears shimmering in her eyes. "I didn't put it on my application here because I wanted to put that nightmare behind me. I knew if anyone looked up my name, they would only see the initial allegations, not the quiet exoneration."

Daniel looked at the woman before him. He saw no deception, only the weary scars of a survivor who had been wronged by powerful institutions in the past.

"You don't have to worry, Emma," Daniel said firmly, shutting the folder. "Harrison Vance thinks he can use the press and the legal system to bully us. He doesn't know who he's dealing with."

The next morning, Harrison Vance held a press conference outside his corporate headquarters, publicly accusing Emma of being a negligent healthcare worker with a dark past who had manipulated the Ashford family. The media went into another frenzy, demanding responses.

Instead of hiding, Daniel took decisive action. He instructed his legal team to file a massive counter-lawsuit against Harrison Vance and his firm for defamation, corporate sabotage, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Furthermore, Daniel tracked down the original attorney from Chicago who had represented Emma eight years prior, obtaining the sealed settlement documents that proved her complete exoneration.

That night, Daniel appeared on a live national news broadcast. With cold, precise precision, he laid out the legal documents on air, showing the public that the Chicago hospital had admitted total fault and paid Emma a full settlement for falsely accusing her.

"Harrison Vance has weaponized a tragic error made by a corrupt hospital years ago to destroy an innocent woman’s character," Daniel stated directly to the camera, his tone formidable. "Emma Vance is a woman of absolute integrity. She saved my son from a life of silent despair. Anyone who attacks her attacks the Ashford family."

The public backfire against Harrison Vance was swift. Shares in Vance Enterprises plummeted as investors panicked over the impending defamation lawsuit and the public backlash against a billionaire picking on a selfless nurse.

When Daniel returned home that night, the mansion was quiet. Ethan was asleep, but Emma was sitting in the kitchen, a mug of tea turning cold between her hands.

As Daniel walked into the warm, yellow light of the kitchen, Emma stood up. "I saw the broadcast," she whispered. "Why did you do that? You put your entire corporate reputation on the line for me."

May you like

Daniel walked over to her, stopping just inches away. The formal distance that had separated employer and employee for months seemed to dissolve entirely.

"I didn't do it just for your reputation, Emma," Daniel said softly, his eyes locking onto hers with unmistakable intensity. "I did it because I cannot bear to see anyone try to hurt you."
