Chapter 8 - The Trial and the Truth

Two months later, the high-profile federal trial of Vanessa Gray commenced in downtown Manhattan.
Because Damian had turned over all evidence, bank records, and medical reports to federal authorities, the prosecution’s case was airtight. Vanessa’s defense attorneys tried to argue diminished capacity, but the overwhelming proof of premeditated attempted murder and corporate sabotage left no room for doubt.
On the final day of the trial, Damian attended the sentencing hearing in person. He wore a crisp black suit, looking every bit the formidable figure he had always been, but without the dark aura of vengeance that had once consumed him.
Claire sat beside him, holding his hand firmly.
The judge slammed the gavel down hard.
“Vanessa Gray, for the charges of attempted murder, dangerous substance poisoning, and conspiracy, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
As the court bailiffs led Vanessa away in handcuffs, she turned to look at Damian one last time. Her eyes were hollow, her spirit broken.
Damian met her gaze calmly. There was no anger left in his eyes—only deep, absolute pity.
Outside the courthouse, a swarm of reporters and news cameras surrounded Damian and Claire on the marble steps.
“Mr. Rourke! Are you returning to the syndicate?” a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone forward.
“Is it true you’ve liquidated all your street holdings?” another asked.
Damian stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking straight into the news cameras.

“The past is dead,” Damian announced clearly, his voice echoing across the plaza. “My focus is entirely on my family and our philanthropic endeavors. The Rourke family has built a new legacy—one based on healing, not harm.”
He guided Claire into the back of a waiting black sedan, leaving the chaotic media circus behind forever.
