Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Shield

Molly looked up at Claire, who gave her a reassuring nod. The tiny girl walked over to the bed and placed her hand on Damian’s shoulder, just as she had done earlier.

“Is Ethan going to wake up now?” Molly asked innocence shining in her eyes.

“Yes, sweetie,” Damian said, pulling Molly into a brief, tight hug. “Because of you. You saved my boy.”

He looked up at Claire. “You and your daughter are moving out of the staff quarters tonight. There are guest suites on the second floor. They belong to you now.”

“Mr. Rourke, we couldn't possibly—” Claire began.

“I’m not asking, Claire,” Damian said, standing up. “You saved my family. From this second on, you are under my personal protection. Anyone who looks at you or Molly the wrong way answers to me.”

Over the next two weeks, the Rourke estate underwent a seismic shift.

Every single servant, guard, and staff member who had been hired during Vanessa’s tenure was thoroughly vetted by an elite private security firm. Half were terminated immediately. The estate was swept from top to bottom by chemical hazard teams. Every carpet, curtain, and mattress in Ethan’s room was removed and destroyed.

Dr. Marcus brought in top pediatric toxicologists to administer a specialized chelation therapy to purge the heavy metals from Ethan’s bloodstream.

Within ten days, the results were miraculous.

The dark circles under Ethan’s eyes began to fade. His skin regained its natural color. His heart rhythm stabilized. For the first time in three years, the boy sat up in bed on his own and asked for pancakes.

Claire was assigned to oversee Ethan’s dietary recovery, ensuring every meal was prepared from scratch with fresh, organic ingredients. Molly spent hours sitting beside Ethan’s bed, reading him picture books and showing him her rag doll.

“Look, Ethan,” Molly said one afternoon, holding up a wooden toy truck. “It goes vroom!”

Ethan, still weak but smiling softly, reached out and took the truck. “Thank you, Molly.”

Standing outside the open doorway, Damian watched the two children interact. For the first time since his wife’s death, the crushing weight in his chest felt a little lighter.

However, peace in Damian Rourke’s world was never permanent.

Down in the city, news of Vanessa’s arrest and the exposure of her betrayal sent shockwaves through New York’s criminal underworld. Damian’s rivals—sensing that the dreaded mafia boss had been distracted and vulnerable—began to move against his territories.

Leading the charge was Salvatore "The Vulture" Moretti, a ruthless rival boss who had long coveted the Hudson Valley trade routes.

One evening, Damian’s office door opened, and Marco walked in with a grim expression.

“Boss, Moretti knows,” Marco said low. “He knows Vanessa’s network collapsed. He thinks you’ve gone soft because of the kid’s recovery. He’s assembling men at the river docks.”

Damian didn't hesitate. He opened his desk drawer, pulled out a heavy black sidearm, and checked the magazine.

“Tell the men to assemble,” Damian said, his eyes cold as ice. “Moretti thinks I’m weak? I’ll show him what happens when you threaten my home.”
