Chapter 7 - The Garden of Renewal

Summer arrived in full splendor. The estate’s rose garden blossomed into a sea of vibrant red and delicate white petals.

Damian hired a renowned landscape architect to build a large wooden playhouse in the center of the garden for Ethan and Molly.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, the family gathered on the outdoor terrace. Mrs. Daley brought out fresh lemonade and warm homemade strawberry tarts.

Ethan and Molly were busy decorating the wooden porch of their playhouse with colored chalk.

“Look, Daddy!” Ethan shouted, waving his chalk-stained hands. “I drew a dragon!”

“It looks like a big doggy!” Molly piped up, giggling as she added bright blue spots to the dragon’s tail.

Damian laughed—a rich, genuine sound that Mrs. Daley later remarked she hadn't heard in nearly a decade.

He walked over to the edge of the terrace where Claire was standing, looking out over the Hudson River. The sunlight caught her dark hair, framing her face in a warm golden glow.

“What are you thinking about?” Damian asked, wrapping an arm gently around her waist.

Claire leaned back into his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.

“I was thinking about how different my life was a year ago,” she said softly. “I had less than two hundred dollars in my bank account. I was terrified about how I was going to feed Molly. I thought the world was completely cold.”

“And now?”

“And now I’m standing in a garden with the man I love, watching our children play,” Claire smiled, turning in his arms to look at him. “It feels like a dream.”

“It’s not a dream, Claire,” Damian said, reaching into his coat pocket. He pulled out a small black velvet box. “You and Molly restored life to this house. You healed my son. And you healed me.”

He opened the box to reveal an exquisite diamond ring, sparkling brightly in the afternoon sun.

“Claire Hayes, will you marry me and make this family complete?”

Claire’s eyes welled with tears of pure joy. She looked at the ring, then up at Damian’s hopeful, loving face.

“Yes,” she whispered. “A thousand times yes.”

From across the lawn, Ethan and Molly spotted them and came running over, their shoes kicking up small wisps of green grass.

“Did Daddy give you a present?” Ethan asked, peering at the shiny ring.

“He gave us a family, Ethan,” Claire said, kneeling down to hug both children tightly.
