Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Nursery

By 4:00 AM, the rain had stopped, leaving the grounds of the Moretti estate glistening under a crisp, starry night sky.

Emily had not slept a wink. She sat in the rocking chair in Noah’s nursery, holding the sleeping boy in her lap, listening to the gentle rhythm of his chest rising and falling. Every creak of the house made her heart leap into her throat.

Suddenly, the nursery door clicked open.

Emily stood up instantly, pulling Noah close to her chest.

Gabriel stood in the doorway. He looked exhausted, his dark coat damp with rain, but his eyes were clear, peaceful, and entirely free of the dark shadow that had haunted him for years.

Emily let out a long breath she felt like she had been holding for eighteen months. "You're back."

"I promised you I would be," Gabriel whispered.

He walked into the room, stepping softly over the carpet. He reached out and gently ran his fingers through Noah’s soft curls. The toddler stirred slightly, smacking his lips, before sinking back into a deep, healthy sleep.

Gabriel looked at Emily, his expression filled with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"It's over, Emily," Gabriel said softly. "All of it. Victor is gone. The syndicate is dissolved. The legal assets have been transferred, and my legitimate holdings are managed by an independent trust. I am no longer a boss. I am just a man."

Emily looked at him in disbelief. "You really gave it all up?"

"I gave up a prison," Gabriel corrected gently, taking Noah from her arms and placing him safely into his crib. He turned back to Emily, taking both of her hands in his. "I built that empire because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe from the world. But power didn't bring me joy. It didn't keep me warm at night. You did."

He stepped closer, pulling her into his embrace. Emily buried her face in his chest, inhaling the scent of rain, sandalwood, and the familiar warmth of the man she had never stopped loving.

"I was so afraid, Gabriel," she sobbed softly into his shirt. "I was so afraid every single day. Hiding, changing names, wondering if today was the day someone found us."

"You never have to run again," Gabriel promised, his voice thick with emotion. "You never have to change your name again. Unless..."

He paused, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes.

Emily blinked, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Unless what?"

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a breath-taking ring—a flawless, emerald-cut diamond set in platinum. It wasn't a mafia boss's showpiece; it was simple, elegant, and timeless.

"Unless you want to change your last name to mine," Gabriel said, his voice trembling slightly. "Emily Carter... I love you. I loved you from the moment you patched up my wounds in that ER three years ago, and I loved you every single day you were gone. Will you marry me? Will you let me be a father to our son, and a husband to you?"

Emily stared at the glittering ring, then looked up into Gabriel’s eyes. The danger, the secrets, the violence—all of it had been burned away, leaving only the soul of the man who loved her beyond measure.

"Yes," Emily whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"

Gabriel slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her with a passionate, desperate tenderness that erased eighteen months of loneliness in a single heartbeat.
