Chapter 4 - Ghosts of the Past

For the next three days, the Moretti estate was locked down tighter than a military base. But inside the glass-and-stone mansion, a quiet domestic sanity began to take root.
Noah recovered with astonishing speed. Within seventy-two hours, the boy was up and running around the grand living rooms, his infectious laughter echoing through halls that had known only cold silence for nearly two years.
Gabriel was transformed. The ruthless boss of the Moretti empire was routinely seen sitting cross-legged on expensive Persian rugs, playing with wooden blocks and reading children's books with a patience that stunned his bodyguards.
Yet, beneath the surface peace, dark clouds were gathering.
Gabriel’s empire was under threat. The eighteen months Emily had spent hiding had not been quiet in the underworld. Gabriel’s ruthless uncle, Victor Moretti, had been quietly carving away at the family business, convinced that Gabriel had grown soft after Emily’s sudden disappearance. Victor believed Gabriel was ripe for removal.
In the private study, surrounded by monitors showing encrypted feeds from across the globe, Gabriel stood with his chief lieutenant, Julian.
"Victor knows," Julian said grimly, laying a file on the mahogany desk. "He has informants in the rural Pennsylvania hospitals. He tracked the unauthorized helicopter flight three nights ago. He knows you brought a woman and a child to the estate."
Gabriel’s eyes turned to cold, liquid steel. "Does he know who the child is?"
"He suspects," Julian replied. "Victor is already moving his men into Philadelphia. He thinks the child is a weakness he can exploit to force you to surrender your shipping routes and step down from the commission."
Gabriel slowly closed the file. A terrifying calm settled over him. "He thinks my son is a weakness?" Gabriel murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "Victor is mistaken. My son is my ultimate strength. Prepare the strike teams."
"Boss?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow.
"For eighteen months, I played defense because I didn't care whether I lived or died," Gabriel said, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the garden where Emily was pushing Noah on a newly built swing set. "I had nothing to live for. Now, I have everything. Tell the captains... we eradicate Victor’s faction tonight."
Later that evening, as night fell over the estate, Emily walked into Gabriel’s study. Noah was sound asleep in the nursery upstairs, guarded by four heavily armed men.
She saw Gabriel adjusting his shoulder holster, placing a sleek black handgun into its leather sheath before pulling on a dark coat.
"You're leaving," Emily said softly, standing in the doorway.
Gabriel stopped. He turned to face her, his expression softening instantly. "I have business to take care of, Emily. Business that should have been settled long ago."
"It's your uncle, isn't it?" Emily walked up to him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I remember what you told me about Victor. He's dangerous, Gabriel."
"He threatened my family," Gabriel said, stepping close to her and taking her face in his hands. "He threatened you and Noah. In my world, Emily, there is only one response to a threat like that. Total, absolute destruction."
"I hate this world, Gabriel," Emily admitted, tears shining in her eyes. "I hate the guns, the secret meetings, the constant fear."
"I know," Gabriel said gently, kissing her forehead. "And that is why tonight is the last night I will ever live in it. When I come back tomorrow morning, Victor will no longer be a threat. The Moretti name will be clean, the syndicate will be restructured, and I will step down."
Emily gasped softly. "Step down? You would leave your empire?"
"An empire is useless if I can't share it with the people I love," Gabriel said, looking deep into her eyes. "I lost you once because of this life. I almost lost our son. I will not lose either of you again. Wait for me, Emily. Just tonight."
Emily looked at the man before her—not the crime lord the world feared, but the man who had cradled their sick son and cried in the dark. She wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest.

"Come back to us," she whispered. "Promise me you’ll come back."
Gabriel held her tight, breathing in the scent of her hair. "I promise."
