Chapter 6 - The Collapse of an Empire

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second until two Chicago Police cruisers pulled up directly in front of the grand hotel entrance, their flashing red and blue lights painting the ballroom windows in chaotic strokes.

The ballroom doors pushed open once more, but this time, there were no guests or smiling ushers. Three federal law enforcement agents, accompanied by local detectives, strode purposefully across the marble floor toward the stage.

Adrian looked like a cornered animal. He backed away from the approaching officers until the back of his knees hit the edge of the head table, nearly knocking over the multi-tiered wedding cake.

“Mr. Adrian Brooks and Ms. Celeste Miller?” the lead detective asked, flashing a badge.

“There’s been a mistake—this is a private matter, a civil dispute—” Adrian stammered, his hands shaking wildly as he tried to put on a brave face, but his voice gave him away completely.

“It’s a criminal matter, Mr. Brooks,” the detective replied coldly. He turned to Celeste, who had sunk into a velvet chair, tears ruining her expensive makeup as she sobbed into her hands. “You are both being placed under arrest for wire fraud, grand larceny, and the falsification of corporate financial records.”

The metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent, stunned hall.

As the officers grabbed Adrian’s arms and forced his wrists behind his back, he looked up and caught my eye one last time. There was no arrogance left in his gaze—only sheer, unadulterated terror, mixed with the sickening realization of everything he had thrown away for a momentary illusion of power.

“Mia...” he whispered, his voice cracking as the officers dragged him toward the exit. “Please... talk to them. Don't do this.”

I didn't answer. I simply adjusted Chloe in my arms, holding her close, and turned my back on him.

Celeste was led away moments later, her Vera Wang gown dragging disgracefully across the sticky floor where champagne had spilled during the chaos.

Arthur Vance and several other board members marched up to the stage, looking at David and me with grim expressions.

“Mrs. Carter,” Arthur said, nodding respectfully. “It appears we owe you a profound apology. And an expression of gratitude. If your legal team hadn't brought this forward today, our firm would have been tied up in a catastrophic federal audit.”

“Thank you, Mr. Vance,” David replied smoothly, shaking the CEO's hand. “We will make sure all recovered assets belonging to Mrs. Carter’s estate are returned immediately. As for the rest of the corporate fallout, I believe you have some internal restructuring to attend to.”

Within minutes, the grand ballroom had emptied of guests, leaving behind only scattered flowers, overturned chairs, and the quiet, heavy atmosphere of a collapsed empire.
