Chapter 4 - Stepping into the Light

The clicking of my heels against the marble floor sounded like gunshots in the dead-silent ballroom. Every head swiveled, tracking my slow, deliberate advance toward the elevated stage.
Adrian’s microphone-amplified chuckle died in his throat as he watched me approach. His eyes narrowed, trying to read my expression, but my face was a mask of cold, serene indifference.
Celeste’s smug smile began to slip. Her hand dropped from her stomach, fingers clenching nervously into the fabric of her Vera Wang gown. She leaned toward Adrian, whispering something urgently out of the side of her mouth, but he didn’t answer. He was staring at the bundle in my arms.
I reached the base of the stage, stopping just a few feet away from the grand mahogany steps. I didn't wait for an invitation. I lifted my skirt slightly and walked up the steps, standing face-to-face with the groom and his glowing bride.
“Mia,” Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave, losing its public bravado and turning sharp and defensive. “What the hell are you doing here? And whose kid is that? Security—!”
“Quiet down, Adrian,” I said, my voice carrying cleanly through the room’s overhead speakers, thanks to the wireless clip-on mic David Vance had discreetly secured to my blazer lapel before I entered the building. “You invited me to witness your happiness. As a polite guest, I brought a gift.”
A few nervous laughs rippled through the crowd, but the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife.
“You look ridiculous,” Celeste spat, stepping forward with a venomous glare. “Coming here with someone else's baby to ruin our wedding day. Are you that pathetic, Mia? You couldn't get pregnant with Adrian, so you had to go steal or borrow a child just to steal his spotlight?”
I turned my gaze slowly toward Celeste. The sheer audacity of her words—coming from a woman who had spent years sneaking around behind my back—stirred a cold fire in my chest.
“Steal a child, Celeste?” I asked softly. “That’s a bold accusation from a woman who has made a career out of stealing things that don't belong to her.”
Celeste’s face paled beneath her heavy bridal makeup. “What are you talking about?”
“Let’s ask the groom,” I replied, shifting my gaze back to Adrian. He had gone completely rigid, his complexion turning an alarming shade of gray. He was staring down at Chloe, who had suddenly opened her eyes—those big, dark, startlingly familiar eyes—and let out a small coo, blinking up at the man standing above her.
“Mia,” Adrian whispered, his voice trembling slightly as panic finally began to crack through his arrogant facade. “Put the child down and get out of here. Right now.”
“I can’t do that, Adrian,” I smiled, tilting my head. “After all, it’s a family reunion.”
With my free hand, I unzipped the leather folder I had carried up the stage and pulled out a single, pristine piece of paper. I held it up so the overhead spotlights caught the official watermark and the embossed seal of the state medical board.
“You invited me here today to brag about your new family,” I announced, projecting my voice so every single investor, socialite, and family member in the hall could hear every word. “You bragged that Celeste was pregnant—the exact thing you spent years telling me I was broken for failing to do. But you made one tiny oversight, Adrian.”
I stepped closer, holding the document right under his nose.
“You never bothered to check if I was pregnant when you kicked me out.”
Adrian’s eyes darted down to the paper. His breath hitched.
It was a court-certified, multi-marker DNA paternity test, matching Adrian Brooks’s genetic profile with Baby Girl Carter with a 99.999% probability.
“This... this is fake,” Adrian choked out, stumbling back a step against the wedding arch. “You fabricated this! You’re insane!”

“Am I?” I asked sweetly. “Dr. Henderson at Chicago General Hospital, who delivered her six days ago, and the court-appointed witness who drew the DNA samples would strongly disagree.”
The room erupted into absolute pandemonium.
