Chapter 3 - The Grand Ballroom

The Chicago Sapphire Hotel buzzed with an obnoxious level of luxury. Chandeliers made of hand-blown Austrian crystal threw cascading patterns of light across polished marble floors, and an army of waitstaff in crisp white gloves circulated with flutes of vintage champagne. String quartets played a classical rendition of a modern pop song, setting an atmosphere of forced, exorbitant romance.
When the heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom swung open, the murmurs of the three hundred elite guests washed over me.
I paused at the threshold.
I didn't cower. I didn't look down. I walked in with my head held high, carrying a sleek designer baby bag on one shoulder and pushing a state-of-the-art stroller containing Chloe, whose face was shielded by a delicate lace canopy.
Whispers immediately broke out across the room. Society matrons in designer gowns stopped mid-sentence, their lorgnettes rising to inspect the uninvited specter at the feast. Word of our bitter divorce had circulated through Chicago’s upper crust a year ago, and everyone expected me to be hiding in a dark apartment somewhere, nursing my wounds.
Instead, I looked radiant.
Up at the elevated head table, Adrian and Celeste stood receiving congratulations from a cluster of wealthy investors. Adrian looked dashing in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his hair styled with gel, a smug, self-satisfied grin plastered across his face. Celeste wore a heavily beaded Vera Wang gown that strained slightly over her five-month baby bump, her face painted with a triumphant, condescending smirk.
Adrian’s eyes scanned the crowd, landing effortlessly on me.
His smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by sheer shock. Then, his arrogant expression returned, mixed with a cruel sort of amusement. He whispered something to Celeste, tapped the crystal glass with a silver spoon to quiet the room, and stepped up to the microphone on the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, rich and dripping with condescension. “Thank you all for being here to celebrate the happiest day of my life. But before we continue with the festivities, I want to take a special moment to acknowledge a very unexpected guest.”
He pointed directly at me, standing near the back of the hall.
“My ex-wife, Mia, has graced us with her presence,” Adrian announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room. Titters of laughter rippled through the crowd. “I suppose she wanted to see what a real, functioning marriage looks like. And hey, maybe she wanted to see a woman who can actually fulfill her natural duties and carry a child, unlike some people.”
Celeste beamed, leaning into Adrian’s side and resting a hand dramatically over her belly, milking the cruelty for all it was worth.
The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating. Every eye turned toward me, waiting for me to burst into tears, run out the doors in shame, or cause a scene.
I did none of those things.

Instead, I slowly reached out, unzipped the lace canopy of the stroller, and gently picked up my baby girl. Chloe stirred, letting out a soft, sweet yawn that echoed faintly through the nearest microphone.
I smoothed down her tiny pink dress, looked straight up at the stage, and began walking forward down the center aisle.
