Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Law

In December, the preliminary legal hearings commenced. Richard Mercer’s legal team argued that his actions, while extreme, were the misguided attempts of a grieving father trying to correct a severe postural deformity—a claim entirely refuted by medical experts.
Valerie sat in the courtroom hallway, her arm around Lila, who had to provide a recorded deposition so she wouldn't have to face her father in person.
"He says he loves me," Lila whispered, staring at her polished shoes. "Why did it hurt so much if he loved me?"
Valerie knelt in front of her, taking both of Lila's hands. "Real love doesn't make you bleed, Lila. Real love doesn't make it hard to breathe. Love protects you, it doesn't break you."
The court proceedings were agonizingly slow, but the evidence was overwhelming. The medical reports, combined with Valerie's detailed documentation of Lila’s behavior and the physical evidence recovered from the home, painted a undeniable picture of severe cruelty.
During this stressful period, Valerie made sure Lila’s daily life remained as stable as possible. Lila returned to school—transferred to a parallel section to give her a fresh start, though she visited Valerie’s room every morning before the bell rang.
Slowly, the pale, terrified girl began to fade away, replaced by a child who laughed when she painted, who loved bright yellow sweaters, and who ran—not walked carefully—across the playground.

In March, the judge issued a final ruling: Richard Mercer's parental rights were permanently revoked, and he was sentenced to a substantial prison term for child endangerment and felony assault.
When Sarah Vance brought the final court papers to Valerie's home, she smiled warmheartedly. "Lila is officially available for adoption. Valerie... I think we both know where she belongs."
