Chapter 3 - The Intervention

Within fifteen minutes, the small health office was filled with quiet, purposeful activity. Two paramedics, accompanied by a police officer and a social worker named Sarah Vance, arrived.

Paramedic Sam, a calm man with a steady voice, knelt next to Lila. "Hi Lila, I'm Sam. We're going to take you to a special clinic where we have some warm liquid that dissolves tough tape so it won't pull your skin. Does that sound okay?"

Lila looked at Valerie for approval. Valerie smiled reassuringly. "I'll go with you in the ambulance if it's okay with Sam."

"Of course," Sam said.

While the paramedics prepared the gurney, Officer Reyes pulled Valerie into the hallway. "We’ve already flagged the father, Richard Mercer. CPS is placing an emergency hold. The mother passed away three years ago, correct?"

"That's what's on her file," Valerie said, her hands shaking slightly now that the initial adrenaline was settling. "He’s been her sole guardian."

"We're sending a unit to his workplace right now," Reyes noted down. "The social worker will meet you at Children's Hospital."

The ride in the ambulance was quiet. Valerie held Lila’s hand the entire way, distractedly humming a gentle tune whenever the vehicle hit a bump in the road. Lila kept her eyes fixed on Valerie, drawing strength from her teacher's presence.

At the hospital, pediatric specialists used specialized medical adhesive remover to painstakingly detach the rigid plastic and tape. The process took over an hour. Beneath the binding, doctors found extensive bruising, raw skin, and signs of restricted diaphragm movement that had caused her blood pressure to plunge and triggered her fainting spell.

Sarah Vance, the social worker, walked into the treatment room after the medical team finished dressing Lila's skin in soothing salves and bandages.

"Lila is safe for the night," Sarah told Valerie outside the door. "Richard Mercer was taken into custody without incident at his office. But we need to find a temporary foster placement for Lila by this evening."

Valerie looked through the glass window at Lila, who looked so tiny in the oversized hospital gown, picking at a cup of chocolate pudding. Valerie thought of her own quiet home, her empty guest room, and the burning need to ensure this child felt truly safe.

"I’m a certified emergency foster care provider," Valerie said, turning to Sarah. "I finished my training last year after my niece moved out. Put her with me."
